The old farmhouse on Cedar Hollow Road had been in Elena’s family for generations. When she inherited it after her grandmother’s passing, she saw it as a chance to escape the city noise and find some peace. But peace was not what she found.

At first, it was the small things: a door creaking open, the faint smell of lavender, the occasional feeling of being watched. Elena dismissed these as the quirks of an old house settling. But then the whispers started. They came at night, soft and childlike, calling her name from the hallway. She would wake up, heart pounding, only to find nothing there.

Her skepticism began to crumble one evening when she heard the sound of a whistling tune coming from the attic. It was a simple, jaunty melody, like something from an old radio show. She grabbed a flashlight and climbed the narrow, creaking stairs. The attic was cluttered with boxes and dusty furniture, but the whistling stopped as soon as she reached the top. She searched for any sign of an intruder but found only a forgotten phonograph record cover, its surface blank.

Weeks passed, and the activity intensified. Elena’s friend, Max, who had a stubborn streak for the rational, came to stay for a few days. He scoffed at her stories, attributing the phenomena to drafts and old pipes. But on his second night, he woke to the sound of rapid footsteps thundering across the hallway floor above him, and then a series of hard knocks on his bedroom door. When he threw it open, the hallway was empty, but the door at the end slowly creaked closed on its own.

Max left the next morning, pale and apologetic. Elena was now truly unnerved. She installed cameras around the house, hoping to capture evidence. The footage was chilling: shadows moving like children playing tag in the living room, the fans in the bedrooms spinning on their own, and the voice of a little girl whispering, ‘Elena, come play with us.’

The final straw came on a stormy night. Elena was in the parlor, reading by the fire, when she heard the whistling again, this time from directly behind her. She spun around, but no one was there. The fire suddenly flickered, and the temperature plummeted. The whistling grew louder, more insistent, and she felt tiny, cold fingers brush the back of her neck.

She ran to the kitchen, where she had installed a camera overlooking the parlor. She played back the footage and saw a group of translucent children, maybe four or five of them, staring at the camera as if they knew they were being watched. One of them, a small boy with a missing front tooth, pointed at the screen and grinned. Then they all started to run toward the camera, and the feed went black.

Elena knew she had to leave. She packed a bag and drove through the rain to a nearby inn. But as she lay in bed that night, she heard it again: the whistling, faint but unmistakable, coming from the hallway outside her inn room door. She bolted upright, her blood running cold. The door handle turned slowly.

She grabbed her phone to call the police, but the line was dead. A child’s laughter echoed from the bathroom, and the light flickered. The whistling grew louder, closer, until it seemed to be inside her head. And then she heard a small voice say, ‘You’ll always be our playmate now.’

Elena never came back to Cedar Hollow Road. But sometimes, late at night, the innkeeper swears he hears a faint, jaunty whistle from the empty room where she stayed, followed by the patter of tiny, bare feet.
