My name is Marcus, a 22-year-old resident of the sleepy town of Millbrook. I’ve been with my girlfriend, Lily, for four years now. About a year ago, I woke up to her slapping me across the face. I shouted, ‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ She was sobbing, her eyes wide with terror. I asked her what happened, and she gasped out that something had pressed on her chest, and she couldn’t move or speak. She said it felt like a heavy, cold weight, and she couldn’t even call my name. I held her, thinking it was just a nightmare, and she eventually fell asleep. I didn’t think much of it.

A month later, the same thing happened to me. I woke up with a crushing pressure on my chest, my limbs frozen, and my voice trapped. I could see a dark shape looming over me, but I couldn’t make out its features. It felt like it was sucking the air from my lungs. Just as suddenly as it started, it stopped, and I could move again. I was terrified, but I convinced myself it was sleep paralysis, a common thing. I told Lily, and she understood, but I could see the fear in her eyes.

During that time, I was drifting through life, not believing in much. But after that, I started attending church with Lily, and I found a new faith. I threw myself into studying the Bible, and I felt a sense of peace. For a year, nothing strange happened. I thought it was behind us. I even joked about it, saying we were both just stressed.

One night, I was staying over at Lily’s apartment. I woke up at 3:33 AM, the exact time those episodes had happened before. The room was cold, and I saw a figure standing at the foot of the bed. It was tall, with long, thin limbs, and its skin was a sickly gray. Its face was featureless, just a blank void. It pointed a long, bony finger at Lily, who was sleeping beside me, and then at me. A voice, like a whisper of old leaves, filled my mind: ‘You think your faith can protect you? I am older than your God, and I have been with you since birth. You will give me the one you love, or I will take you both.’

I tried to pray, to call on Jesus, but my voice wouldn’t come. The figure laughed, a dry, rasping sound, and then pressed down on my chest with all its weight. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move. I thought I was dying. Then I remembered the scripture, ‘Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.’ I focused all my will, thinking of Lily, of the love we shared, and I forced out a single word: ‘No.’

The pressure lifted, and the figure vanished. I gasped for air, my heart pounding. I shook Lily awake, and she looked at me with a face of terror. She said, ‘What is that thing that follows you? It tried to take me this time.’ I knew then that this wasn’t just sleep paralysis. It was a real, malevolent entity that had been with me all along.

The next morning, I went to my pastor, and we prayed over the apartment. But I could still feel it lingering, watching. I have decided to fight it with faith, but I’m not sure if I’ll win. The weight that would not budge is still there, waiting for the moment when my faith weakens. And I fear that moment is coming.
