I woke suddenly in the darkness, my lungs straining for air that wouldn’t come. My first thought was of my dog, a large fellow who sometimes stretched out across me during the night. I pushed weakly at the imagined weight, but my arms felt like stone.
As my mind cleared, I understood the truth. Nothing living was on top of me. The heavy blanket was drawn up to my chin, ordinary and still. Yet a tremendous pressure pushed down on my entire body, pinning me to the mattress. I was completely trapped, unable to even turn my head.
Fear tightened my throat. I focused every bit of my strength into moving a single finger, a toe, anything to break the invisible hold. For a long, terrifying minute, nothing happened. Then, with a final, desperate effort, I managed a sharp twitch of my hand.
The pressure vanished instantly. I gasped a deep, ragged breath of cool air. The room was silent and empty, the blanket lying peacefully where it had been all along.
