For weeks, the dreams had been a slow poison. They started as whispers in the dark of my mind, then bloomed into vivid, violent bursts of passion I didn’t recognize. Each morning, I woke with a slick sheen of sweat and a gnawing sense of violation, as if my body had been borrowed and returned without consent. Last night was different. I found myself staring at a grainy screen, like an old CCTV feed, watching myself sleep. Then a voice, low and gravelly, spoke beside me. I couldn’t make out the words, but my skin prickled. I tried to walk away in the dream, to force the image to change, but my legs were lead. I struggled, willing myself awake.

Just as I felt the surface of consciousness, a whisper coiled into my ear. It said my name, Lena, so faint I thought I imagined it, but it grew, pressing against my eardrums. I thought, ‘I’m almost awake, and there’s something here.’ So I answered, ‘Yes?’ The air above me thickened. A weight slammed onto my chest, crushing. My throat closed as if a stone had lodged there. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, only my head twitched from side to side. Then, as abruptly as it began, it stopped. I gasped, sitting upright, my heart thundering. My room was empty, but the air smelled of ozone and stale breath.

That morning, I found a small, smooth stone on my pillow, warm to the touch, with a single word scratched into it: ‘Mine.’ I told myself it was a prank, but I knew better. I called my friend, Marcus, who had a knack for the occult. He listened, then went quiet. ‘Lena,’ he said, ‘that sounds like a binding. Something has claimed you. You must have triggered it by answering. You gave it a foothold.’ My blood ran cold. I remembered the dreams, the feeling of being watched, the whispers. ‘How do I break it?’ I asked. ‘You can’t. Not alone. You need to find the source.’

Days passed. The dreams grew more intense, more vivid. I started seeing a face in the static of my TV, a man with hollow eyes. He spoke in a language I didn’t know, but somehow understood. He wanted me to come to him, to give myself willingly. The stone grew hot in my pocket. One night, I followed a faint trail of incense to a forgotten part of the city, an old theater that had burned down decades ago. The air was thick with soot. In the center of the ruined stage, I saw a figure. He was tall, wearing a tattered suit, his face gaunt. He smiled, revealing black teeth. ‘You came,’ he said. His voice was the whisper from my dreams.

I tried to run, but my feet wouldn’t move. He approached, and the weight pressed on my chest again. ‘You answered. Now you are mine.’ I struggled, but it was like fighting a tide. He raised a hand, and I felt the stone in my pocket grow searing. I pulled it out, and it was glowing, the word ‘Mine’ now a brand. In desperation, I threw it at him. It struck his forehead, and for a moment, he froze. The theater trembled. I saw a flash of a young woman, her eyes wide, her throat slashed, whispering, ‘Break it.’ I realized she was his first victim. I grabbed a shard of glass from the floor and slashed my palm, letting blood drip onto the stone. It shattered, and the man let out a scream that pierced my ears. The theater collapsed around me.

I woke in a hospital, Marcus by my side. ‘You were found in the theater,’ he said. ‘You were unconscious for three days. What happened?’ I told him everything. The stone, the man, the woman. Marcus was pale. ‘You broke the binding, but you may have released them. He might not be gone.’ I looked at my palm, where the cut was already healing. There, in faint white scar tissue, was the word ‘Mine.’ I realized then that the answer to my ‘yes’ was not just a claim; it was a promise I had unknowingly made. The story of Lena and the weight of her answer was not over. It was only the beginning of a new haunting, one that would follow her until the end of her days.
