The motel room was suffocating, even with the AC wheezing in the corner. Carla had been driving for thirteen hours, fleeing the failed orchard and the man who owned it, trading one dead end for another. She lay on the stiff sheets, hands tucked behind her head, staring at the water-stained ceiling, her mind a carousel of unpaid bills and the sharp scent of her father’s cheap whiskey. The clock on the nightstand blinked 3:00 AM.

It started as a speck of green pollen drifting from the ceiling, unremarkable, like dust motes dancing in the headlights of a passing truck. Carla watched it idly, her thoughts already drifting toward sleep. But it didn’t fall. It sank, slowly, deliberately, until it hovered a foot above her chest, pulsing with a faint internal light. She blinked, and it was closer, inches from her nose, filling her vision with an eerie glow.

A weight pressed down on her. Not a pressure, but a crushing mass, as if the air itself had solidified into a thousand-pound slab. Her breath hitched, her ribs aching. She tried to yell, to scream, ‘Get the hell off me!’ but her voice cracked into a whisper. A second attempt produced only a strangled gasp. Her limbs refused to obey, pinned to the mattress by an invisible gravity.

A laugh tinkled from the corner of the room. A little girl’s giggle, bright and innocent, but wrong. It echoed, multiplying, until a chorus of childish laughter filled the darkness. Carla’s vision swam, the green light flickering, and then everything went black as if a curtain had been drawn across her eyes.

In the void, she felt her mouth stretch open, her jaw cracking, the muscles moving against her will. She could feel her tongue pressing down, the air rushing out in a thin stream, but she was a passenger in her own body, screaming internally. The laughter crescendoed into a shrieking, glass-breaking cacophony that seemed to come from inside her skull, rattling her teeth.

Then, silence. The weight lifted. The darkness receded, revealing the same stained ceiling. She could move again, and she scrambled off the bed, her heart pounding, her body slick with sweat. The green light was gone. The motel room was empty. But on the ceiling, where the light had first appeared, there was a small, perfectly circular hole, black as coal.

Carla grabbed her purse, her keys, and fled into the night, not stopping until the motel was a dot in her rearview mirror. It wasn’t until hours later, as she sipped burnt coffee at a truck stop, that she noticed the faint green glow under her fingernails. And in the restroom mirror, when she leaned in to inspect them, she saw her pupils had gone a pale, sickly green. And she couldn’t stop smiling, a small, knowing smile that she didn’t will onto her face. The laughter began again, soft, somewhere in the back of her head. It was following her home.
