The first time I felt it, I thought it was just a bad dream. I woke up in the middle of the night, not fully awake, but aware that something was pressing down on my chest, pinning me to the mattress. I couldn’t move my arms or legs, and my eyes felt like they were rolling back into my skull. I tried to call out for help, but my throat was locked. I could only whisper a desperate prayer to God, and as soon as I did, the pressure eased, and I could move again. I lay there, sweating, and convinced it was a night terror.

A week later, it returned. This time, the pressure was accompanied by a high-pitched screaming in my ears, the sound of a child in agony. It was so vivid that I thought someone was in the room. The next morning, I asked my mother if she had any nightmares. She looked at me strangely and said that she had the same thing happen to her that exact night. We both heard a child screaming, but the strange part was that my two-year-old sister, who never woke up at night, had been crying hysterically for no reason.

We lost that apartment soon after, due to my father’s job, and moved into a cramped trailer park. For a while, the episodes stopped. I thought it was behind us. But then, two months later, it happened again. This time it lasted two nights in a row, but there were no voices, just the crushing weight and the feeling of something malevolent watching me from the shadows. By then, I had learned to endure it, to wait it out, but I never told anyone. I was afraid they’d think I was crazy.

As the weeks passed, the episodes became more frequent. I started to notice a pattern: they always occurred when the moon was full, and they grew more intense each time. I began to hear a faint tapping in the walls, like tiny fingers scratching from the inside. I mentioned it to my mother, who said she thought it was mice. But the taps would stop when I got too close, as if something was listening.

One night, I woke up to find my sister standing at the foot of my bed, staring at the wall with wide, unseeing eyes. She was whispering in a language I didn’t recognize. I called out to her, but she didn’t respond. I finally managed to shake her awake, and she looked at me as if she’d never seen me before. Then she started to cry, saying something about ‘the man in the walls.’

The next day, I found a loose panel in the hallway that I’d never noticed. Behind it was a small, hollow space, barely big enough for a child to crawl into. Inside, I found a set of old, rusted keys and a child’s toy—a small, wooden car, worn and faded. I felt a chill run down my spine. I knew these were left by someone, or something, long ago.

That night, the weight returned, but this time, it was more intense. I felt as if the very walls were closing in on me. I began to choke, as if invisible hands were around my throat. I could hear the screaming again, but now it was not just in my ears—it was in my head, a cacophony of voices all at once, begging for release.

In desperation, I remembered the keys. I grabbed them from my pocket and began to scratch at the wall behind my bed. The plaster crumbled, revealing a hollow space. I thrust my hand inside, feeling around, and my fingers brushed against something cold and metallic—a small, rusted key. I pulled it out, and as I did, the screaming stopped.

The next morning, I found the wall had sealed itself again, as if it had never been broken. The toy car was gone. My sister was quiet, but she refused to enter the hallway. We moved out soon after, but I know it wasn’t over. The weight in the walls is still there, waiting for the next full moon, and I can still hear the faint scratching of tiny fingers, echoing in the silence of my new apartment.
