I’ve called the old farmhouse on Cedar Hollow Road home for nearly twenty-five years, ever since my parents brought me here as a child. The place creaks and moans like any aging structure, but it’s the quiet moments that unsettle me most. I first noticed them when my son, Leo, was just a few months old. I’d wake in the dead of night, drawn to his crib by some instinct, and find these dark silhouettes gathered around him, their forms blurring at the edges. They never moved, only watched, and once I heard a rasping voice whisper, ‘Guard him,’ and another answered, ‘The dark one.’

That was before Leo started talking to ‘Daddy.’ He’d point at empty corners and giggle, or wave at things I couldn’t see. One night, I caught a figure standing in his doorway, taller than any man, with eyes that burned like embers. My blood ran cold, but Leo just smiled and called it ‘Daddy.’ Those shadow figures have been a constant presence since, always lurking at the periphery, peeking around doorways, standing in the hallway at night, watching us. I’ve never felt malice from them, more like guardians or sentinels, but I can’t shake the feeling that they’re waiting for something.

After joining an online forum for paranormal experiences, I found advice on cleansing the house and warding off negative spirits. I followed the rituals carefully—burning sage, placing salt lines, and drawing protective symbols over every door and window. For a week, the house felt lighter, and the shadows seemed to recede. But on the seventh night, I woke to a heavy silence and found Leo standing in the middle of his room, staring at the far wall. His eyes were wide, and he whispered, ‘They’re gone, Mommy. The good ones left. But the other ones are coming.’

My heart thudded as I turned to see the wall ripple like water, and from it stepped a figure made of pure black, but this one was different—it had no human shape, just a gaping maw that seemed to drink the light. The shadows that had watched over us for years were gone, and in their place, a new presence filled the house. I grabbed Leo and ran, but every door led to a corridor of darkness, and every window showed only the hungry void. I heard a voice, not from outside, but from inside my own mind, repeating, ‘You removed the watchers. Now we claim the child.’

We’re still in the house, but we’re not alone. The new inhabitants have taken the shape of my fears, and they whisper to Leo in a language I don’t understand. I spend my nights in the corner of his room, clutching a shard of obsidian I found in the attic, while the shadows press against the walls like a living tide. I realize now that the shadow people weren’t there to protect us from evil—they were protecting the world from what would come if they ever left. And in my foolishness, I let them go.
