The old farmhouse had always been a place of quiet unease, but for Mara, it was home. The bedroom she’d claimed as her own, with its sloping ceiling and drafty windows, had never felt truly hers. It was the wardrobe that unsettled her most, a massive, built-in oak structure that seemed to exhale cold air even in summer. Its doors were always slightly ajar, no matter how firmly she pushed them shut.

It began with small things: the quilt slipping off her feet as she slept, her hairbrush appearing on the opposite side of the room, the faint scent of lavender that she never wore. She chalked it up to old hinges, mice, and imagination, but the incidents grew bolder.

One night, a thunderous crack shattered the silence. It came from the foot of her bed, as if something had slammed against the wooden post. The entire house stirred, but when she flicked on the lamp, nothing was out of place. The wardrobe door, however, was now wide open, yawning into darkness.

Two weeks later, she woke to a pressure at the foot of the mattress, a gentle depression that sank and then stilled. She lay frozen, watching the shape of nothing, and it seemed to watch her back. It left when the first bird sang.

Then, last Tuesday, she was wide awake, reading by the glow of her phone, when the bed dipped again. This time, it moved. The pressure crawled up the mattress, slow and deliberate, like a child creeping under the covers. It stopped at her right side, and she felt the illusion of tiny fingers brushing her arm. She bolted upright, but the room was empty. The wardrobe door was now closed, clicking softly.

She rearranged her room, moved the bed to face the window, shoved a chair against the wardrobe door, and hung her mother’s old mirror on the opposite wall. For a few days, nothing happened. She almost convinced herself it was over.

But last night, she woke to a vibration, a low hum that rattled her teeth and pulsed through the bedframe. She sat up, and the wardrobe door was open, not just a crack, but all the way. Inside, beyond the hanging coats, was a darkness so deep it seemed solid. And from that darkness came a sound, not of a child, but of something old and hungry, a sound like wood groaning, and she realized the wardrobe had been waiting all along. As the vibration reached her heart, she saw, in the mirror across the room, a small, pale figure standing inside the wardrobe, not a child, but something that wore a child’s shape, and it was smiling at her with an endless mouth of splinters. The next morning, Mara was gone. The bed was empty, the room tidy, but the wardrobe door was firmly shut, and from the inside, something thumped. Once. Twice. Then, a child’s laugh, muffled by oak.
