In our old home, my bedroom door always stayed open. From my bed, I had a clear view of the long upstairs corridor and the large decorative plate that hung on the wall opposite the staircase. It was fixed by a single, sturdy hook.

One quiet afternoon, the top of the plate simply lifted away from the wall. The bottom stayed in place for a second before the whole thing swung forward. It never dropped; instead, it glided down the entire flight of stairs as if pushed, shattering on the tiles below. My father shouted from the kitchen, accusing my brothers and me of playing ball indoors.

The strange part was the hook. It remained straight and strong on the wall. For the plate to fall that way, the top had to come free first, as if lifted by an unseen hand. It wasn’t scary, just a puzzle that made no sense.

After that day, nothing would stay on that wall. My parents tried nails and stronger hooks, but every new item we placed there eventually slid off and tumbled down the stairs.
