When I was ten, my cousins and I spent most summer weekends at our aunt Miriam’s farmhouse. The house was a sprawling, old timber-framed thing that smelled of hay and woodsmoke, and we loved every creaky corner of it. Aunt Miriam was our favorite relative because she never told us to be quiet. She’d play games with us until the stars came out, and one of our favorites was ‘Ghost in the Grain.’

In that game, Aunt Miriam would turn off the lights in the back wing of the house, which comprised the old laundry room, the pantry, and the study. She’d hide somewhere in those three rooms beneath a white linen sheet, and we’d go hunting with a single flashlight. When we found her, we’d shriek with laughter and bolt back to the living room, where Uncle Bert sat in his armchair, pretending to watch the news but actually dozing.

We played round after round, our sneakers squeaking on the linoleum as we raced past the mudroom and the utility closet. The game was pure joy, the dark just a playground. I can’t recall how many rounds we played that particular evening, but something changed on our final run.

We had just spotted Aunt Miriam’s sheet fluttering behind the study’s heavy curtains, and with a collective gasp, we turned and sprinted for the living room. As we passed the mudroom’s open door, my gaze snagged on something in the shadows. A figure stood there, tall and impossibly broad, draped in what looked like a tattered cassock. It wasn’t a sheet; it was a vestment, black with silver threading that caught the flashlight beam. The face above it was not a face but a smooth, pale oval, like a mannequin’s head, and it was turning toward me.

I stumbled, my heart lurching, but my cousins were already ahead, and I didn’t stop. We crashed into the living room, gasping, and Aunt Miriam was already there, folding her sheet and chuckling. ‘You’re getting too fast,’ she said, but I couldn’t laugh. I told her what I saw, and she frowned, her eyes darting to the dark hallway. ‘That’s just the old coat rack,’ she said, but I knew it wasn’t.

The next morning, we explored the mudroom. There was no coat rack, just a peg board with a few old hats. I tried to convince myself it was a trick of the light, but for the rest of that visit, I avoided the back wing.

Years passed, and I didn’t think about it until Aunt Miriam passed away last autumn. My cousins and I gathered to clear out the farmhouse. The place felt hollow, stripped of its warmth. As we sorted through boxes in the attic, we found a trunk wrapped in twine. Inside was a garment—a long, black ecclesiastical robe with silver threading, and beneath it, a note in Aunt Miriam’s handwriting. It read: ‘To whoever finds this, I’m sorry. I saw it too, when I was ten. It only appears to children who play the game. It is not a ghost. It is a watcher, and it follows them. Burn this before it—’ The sentence ended there.

We burned the robe in the yard, but as the flames consumed it, I felt a cold draft from the house. I turned to see the back door ajar, and in the doorway, the pale oval face stared at me, its vestment now nothing but smoke. It raised a hand, and I saw it was holding a single black feather. It dropped it, and it drifted to the ground, then the figure was gone.

I haven’t slept well since. And sometimes, in the corner of my eye, I see that smooth face watching from doorways. It’s not a ghost. It’s something that waits for children who play games in the dark, and it never leaves them, not even when they grow up. I’m writing this now, because I know it’s seen me write it. And it’s smiling.
