When my cousin Tyler and his older brother Max were forced to move into the attic room of our grandmother’s old farmhouse, they thought it was just a dusty, creepy space. The house had been in the family for generations, but it had stood empty for years after our grandmother passed. The attic room, with its low sloping ceiling and a single small window, was the only extra bedroom, and Tyler and Max were not thrilled.

Their first night, the floorboards creaked under their weight, and the wind howled through the cracks in the walls. Tyler, a light sleeper, was startled awake by a soft voice, almost a whisper, coming from the corner of the room. ‘Tyler, come play with me,’ it said. Tyler froze, his heart pounding. He didn’t see anyone, just the shadow of the old dresser. He shook Max awake, who groggily told him it was just the wind, and went back to sleep.

The next night, Tyler heard it again, clearer this time. ‘Tyler, let’s play hide and seek.’ He sat up in bed, his eyes scanning the darkness. The voice seemed to come from under the bed. Tyler grabbed his flashlight and shone it under the bed, but there was nothing. Max woke up annoyed and said, ‘It’s just your imagination. Go to sleep.’

That weekend, our family gathered at the farmhouse for Halloween. Our uncle, my dad’s brother, told us about the attic room’s history. A young boy, maybe eight years old, had died in that room in the 1920s. No one knew how. They called him ‘The Boy’ because no one remembered his name. He’d been a boarder in the house when the farm was thriving. After he died, the room was sealed off for years, but only a few families had used it since, and they all reported strange occurrences.

As Uncle Paul spoke, a loud door slam echoed from the upstairs hallway. Everyone fell silent. ‘That’s him,’ Uncle Paul said with a nervous chuckle. ‘He never did like people talking about him.’ I was terrified, and I crawled onto the floor next to our golden retriever, Bella. Bella, sensing my fear, scooted closer to me, licking my face as if to comfort me.

Then Uncle Paul continued with another story. He and Aunt Linda, who were downstairs in the kitchen, had once heard footsteps above them. They went to investigate, but the attic door was locked from the inside. They had to force it open, but the room was empty. ‘He’s harmless,’ Uncle Paul assured us, ‘but he doesn’t like being ignored.’

That night, Tyler and Max had to sleep in the attic room again. Tyler couldn’t sleep, and he heard the boy again, but this time the voice was more urgent. ‘Tyler, come play with me NOW!’ Tyler wasn’t about to go anywhere. He yanked Max’s arm. ‘Max, wake up! It’s him!’

Max sat up, and they both heard a low, guttural laugh echoing from the closet. Tyler grabbed his phone and dialed his dad, who said, ‘Just try to sleep. Call me if you hear anything else.’

But the next morning, Tyler was missing. Max woke up to an empty bed. He found Tyler in the barn, shivering, clutching a wooden toy from the attic. Tyler said the boy had taken him to the barn and made him play hide and seek until dawn. He said the boy looked like a pale, hollow-eyed child, always just out of sight.

From that day on, Tyler refused to sleep in the attic. He slept on the couch, and Max joined him, even though he claimed not to believe in ghosts. But we all knew the boy was still there. Sometimes, at night, we’d hear the attic door creak open, and footsteps would shuffle around above us. And occasionally, a faint voice would whisper, ‘Play with me…’
