The old manor, a relic of a bygone era, had stood empty for decades, a lonely sentinel against the perpetually bruised sky. Its last inhabitants, the wealthy Atherton family, had met a grisly end within its walls, a tragedy whispered about but never fully explained. Tonight, a group of urban explorers, drawn by the allure of the forbidden and the promise of spectral encounters, had decided to brave its decaying grandeur. Liam, the de facto leader, a man whose bravado masked a gnawing unease, jimmied the ancient lock on the greenhouse door.

The air inside was thick with the cloying scent of decay, a morbid perfume of dead flowers and damp earth. Moonlight filtered through the grimy glass panes, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like wraiths. Sarah, ever the skeptic, scoffed, her voice unnaturally loud in the oppressive silence. “Just old plants, Liam. Nothing to get worked up about.” But even she couldn’t deny the unnerving chill that permeated the space, a cold that had nothing to do with the autumn night outside.

They moved deeper into the greenhouse, past rows of skeletal trellises and overturned terracotta pots. It was then that Mark, the youngest and most impressionable of the group, stopped dead. He pointed a trembling finger towards a patch of soil near the far wall. “What is that?” he stammered. In the soft loam, meticulously arranged, were a series of tiny, intricate figures sculpted from what looked disturbingly like bone fragments and dried leaves. Each figure was disturbingly lifelike, contorted in postures of agony and despair.

As Liam cautiously approached for a closer look, a guttural scraping sound echoed from the far end of the greenhouse. It was the unmistakable noise of something heavy being dragged across the flagstone floor. A gust of icy wind, though no windows were open, swept through the structure, extinguishing their flashlights one by one. Panic flared, a primal urge to flee. Sarah fumbled for her phone, its screen a meager beacon in the encroaching darkness. The scraping grew louder, closer, accompanied now by a faint, rhythmic *thump-thump-thump*.

Suddenly, a towering silhouette loomed in the faint moonlight, impossibly tall and impossibly thin. It was hunched over, its form obscured by the shadows, but the glint of something sharp, like a trowel or a spade, could be seen in its elongated hand. A low, rasping sound, like dry leaves skittering across stone, emanated from it. It didn’t seem to see them, or perhaps it ignored them, its attention fixed on the peculiar soil at its feet. It knelt, and with its long, gnarled fingers, began to meticulously plant something small and dark into the earth. The *thump-thump-thump* intensified, and the explorers realized with dawning horror that it was the sound of its own, unearthly heart, beating a rhythm of malice within the decaying shell.
