For years, I had a faithful dog named Benny. He was more than just a pet; he was my companion through thick and thin. As he grew older, he became frail and required special care. I often found myself waking up in the middle of the night to check on him, fearing he might need me. After he passed away, I felt an emptiness in my home.

A week later, I started hearing a familiar sound: the gentle tapping of paws against my bedroom door. I was half-asleep, but it was unmistakable. I thought it was Benny, just like before. I would get up, hopeful, and open the door, but there was nothing there. Just the quietness of the night.

In the same town lived my neighbor, Lily. She grew up in a family that embraced the unusual. Her grandmother often told stories of spirits visiting their old farmhouse. Lily herself claimed she could sense things others couldn’t, sharing tales of seeing shadows that weren’t cast by anything. One evening, while chatting over coffee, she told me about the time she felt her late grandfather’s presence in her garden, as if he were tending to the flowers.

Among my acquaintances were two colleagues who shared eerie experiences from their childhoods. One recounted a night spent at his grandparents’ house, where he swore he saw a figure standing at the foot of his bed, only to vanish when he blinked. The other spoke of a night in their old school, where they claimed to hear whispers in the hallways when no one was around. These tales often left us shivering yet fascinated.

While I missed Benny dearly, those nights of tapping at the door and the stories from friends made me feel connected to something beyond this world. Perhaps it was a reminder of love that lingers, even after it seems to fade away.
