I had just returned from a holiday in the English countryside, and one memory clung to me like a cold draft. My friends and I—three weary souls from the city—had sought escape in ancient stone and legend. We found ourselves in a forgotten network of vaults beneath a derelict abbey, guided by a man with eyes like coal who claimed to lead tours through the ‘most haunted depths.’

Our group of twenty-odd strangers shuffled into the earth, past iron gates and arches that wept moisture. The guide’s voice echoed, weaving tales of monks, plague victims, and a miser who hoarded gold beneath the flagstones. The air grew thick with the smell of damp and old bones. I felt a prickling at my neck, but dismissed it as imagination.

At the tour’s climax, we gathered in a wide chamber where the guide invited us to listen for ‘the whispers of the past.’ I stood near the back, trying to catch my breath. Suddenly, a child’s voice, impossibly sweet and close, breathed into my ear: ‘You shouldn’t have come.’ I froze. My skin crawled, and a wave of nausea swept through me. The world tilted, and I staggered.

My friend, Daniel—a sturdy fellow with a calm demeanor—grabbed my arm. ‘Come on, you need air,’ he said, leading me away from the group into a narrow side passage. We wandered, hoping to find a quieter spot, but the maze of corridors twisted and turned. After a while, we realized we were lost. The voices of the tour had faded to nothing.

We found ourselves in a smaller vault, its ceiling beaded with moisture. A single lantern flickered on a ledge, casting long shadows. Daniel tried to calm me, but the air felt heavy, charged. Then, at the far end of the vault, a figure emerged from the darkness—not solid, but a wavering silhouette, like heat haze. It moved toward us, featureless but somehow menacing. My heart hammered as it drew closer, then dissipated like smoke.

We didn’t speak, but we both backed toward the only exit. As we rushed through the corridors, my vision blured, and I heard the child’s voice again, now distant and mocking: ‘Leave him, he’s mine.’ We burst into the main tour path, gasping, and found the guide waiting with an impatient look. He said nothing about our absence, only nodded and led us out.

We left the vaults and never returned. Daniel and I agreed not to speak of it, but I knew he saw it too. Nights since, I’ve woken with the child’s whisper in my ear, and the feeling of cold hands on my shoulders. The vault is a scar on my mind, but what haunts me most is not the figure—it’s the certainty that something in that darkness followed me home, and it’s waiting for me to sleep.
