In the autumn of 2016, I was a divorced father of two, living in a creaky Victorian house on the edge of a sleepy town. The house had a history, but I’d never paid much mind to the local gossip about its previous owners. My mornings were a blur of school runs and tight deadlines, and that particular Tuesday was no different. I rushed out the door, forgetting my phone on the kitchen counter. After dropping my kids at their grandmother’s, I drove back home, annoyed at my own carelessness.

I let myself in, the old lock groaning in protest. The house was quiet, but there was a heaviness in the air, a stillness that felt watching. I hurried up the stairs to use the bathroom, my footsteps echoing on the worn wooden steps. As I finished and stepped out into the hallway, I glanced down the corridor toward my sons’ room. At the far end, where the hallway turned, I saw a dark patch on the wall, like a stain of shadow, roughly the shape of a door. It was out of place, a distortion in the morning light, and a primal fear seized me. I bolted down the stairs, my heart pounding.

But as I descended, I heard it: behind my own rapid steps, a heavier tread, synchronized with mine, yet not. The creaks were distinct, lower, almost deliberate. I didn’t dare look back. I reached the front door, threw it open, and stumbled out into the yard, gasping. The feeling of being chased was overwhelming, a sense that something had wanted me gone. I stood there, shaking, and vowed to ignore that part of the house.

Weeks passed. The incident faded from my conscious mind, but I couldn’t shake a new sensation: I was being watched. I’d catch glimpses of movement in the corner of my eye, only to find nothing. At night, I’d lie awake, listening to the house settle, but the sounds felt different—not the usual groans of old wood, but something pacing, always just outside my door.

One evening, while tucking my sons in, my youngest, Leo, asked, ‘Dad, who’s the tall man in the hallway?’ My blood ran cold. He described a figure with no face, just darkness, standing at the top of the stairs, as if waiting. My older son, Max, added, ‘He’s always there at night, watching us.’ I tried to play it off as a nightmare, but deep down, I knew they were telling the truth.

That night, I decided to investigate. I waited until the kids were asleep, then crept up the stairs with a flashlight. The hallway was empty, but the shadowy patch on the wall was still there, now more defined, like a dark rectangle that seemed to pulse with a faint energy. I reached out to touch it, and my hand passed through into a cold, still space. I pulled back, horrified.

I descended the stairs again, but this time, the footsteps behind me were not just an echo. They were heavier, deliberate, and they didn’t stop at the bottom. I turned and saw a tall, dark figure at the top of the stairs, its face a void. It began to descend, slowly, each step a loud, deliberate creak. I ran into the kitchen, grabbed a chair, and held it in front of me like a shield.

The figure stopped at the bottom, seeming to breathe, though there was no sound. And then, in a voice that was not a voice but a vibration in the air, it said, ‘This is my home.’ I backed out of the kitchen, into the night, and called the police. But when they arrived, the house was empty, normal. They chocked it up to a prank.

But I knew. That shadow had been there long before I moved in, and it had decided to make my family its wardens. We moved out shortly after, but even now, in our new apartment, I sometimes hear those heavy footsteps in the hallway outside our door. And I know, with a certainty that chills me, that the uninvited footfall will follow us wherever we go.
