The salt-laced wind whipped against the weathered clapboard of our new home in Port Blossom, Maine. It was meant to be a fresh start, a quiet escape from the city’s clamor for my mother, my younger sister, and me. Our scruffy terrier, Barnaby, seemed to approve, his tail a perpetual blur against the faded floral wallpaper.

One blustery Tuesday, while my mother and sister ventured into the nearby town for supplies, I remained behind, buried in textbooks for an upcoming history exam. The old house groaned with the wind, and I tried to ignore the unsettling creaks. Then came the rapping. A sharp, insistent *thump-thump-thump* against the front door. My heart leaped. Assuming it was my mother, who had forgotten her keys, I hurried downstairs. But the porch was empty, save for a scattering of dry leaves. No one. I chalked it up to the wind playing tricks and returned to my studies. A few minutes later, the same sound, this time at the back door, a frantic series of knocks against the aged wood. Again, I found nothing but the relentless wind. A shiver traced its way down my spine, a primal unease I couldn’t shake. I tried to dismiss it, seeking solace in the cold, sweet comfort of a soda from the kitchen, but the unsettling feeling lingered.

The following week, the strangeness shifted its focus. I was at a neighbor’s house, a sprawling Victorian overlooking the churning Atlantic, while our mother prepared a late lunch for my sister and me. Our babysitter, a stern woman named Mrs. Gable, had taken my sister to the small, overgrown park nearby. When we returned, the aroma of simmering stew filled the air. My mother, with her usual quiet grace, retreated to the worn armchair in the living room, a well-loved novel in her hands. She lost herself in the narrative for perhaps thirty minutes, the rhythmic crash of waves against the shore a constant, soothing backdrop. Then, a distinct, icy exhalation brushed the nape of her neck, a frigid caress that stole the air from her lungs. She froze, her blood turning to ice. The book slipped from her grasp, landing with a soft thud on the threadbare rug. She was utterly alone in the room. Or, she should have been.
