The Unannounced Goodbye

My aunt has told this tale for decades, and it still makes the hair on my arms stand up. It involves my great-aunt, many years ago. One afternoon, she was home alone, tidying the kitchen. The front doorbell chimed unexpectedly.

Standing on the porch was her dear friend, Elara. Elara seemed out of breath, her words tumbling out in a rushed, frantic stream. She said she had come for a final farewell. Confused, my great-aunt asked where she was traveling to. Elara didn’t answer, instead repeating that she had to go immediately.

As she turned to leave, the fringe of her scarf snagged on the corner of the hall table. With a sharp pull, she freed herself, leaving a tiny scrap of blue thread behind. Then she was gone. My great-aunt stood in the hallway, baffled by her friend’s strange behavior.

She was just returning to her work when the telephone rang. It was Elara’s brother, his voice heavy with grief. He was calling to say that Elara had been in a car crash earlier that day and had not survived.
