In the spring of 2019, my girlfriend Mira and I moved into a converted warehouse in the industrial district of our city. The building had been recently renovated, but it still carried the smell of old timber and dust. We spent our first week painting the living room and assembling furniture, so we mostly slept in the bedroom, which we had finished first. The other rooms were a clutter of boxes and paint cans.
One evening, I had to stay late at work, and Mira was away visiting her parents. I came home exhausted and decided to crash on the pull-out couch in the living room, which was still mostly empty. The radiator was off, and the window was cracked open, but the summer heat was oppressive. I fell asleep quickly.
At 3:47 AM, I woke up shivering. The room was freezing, so cold that my breath fogged. The window was still cracked, but the air outside was warm. I pulled the blanket tighter and tried to sleep, but a strange sense of being watched kept me restless. Eventually, I dozed off.
The next morning, I dismissed it as a weird dream. We continued working on the apartment, and the weeks passed. We grew comfortable, and the little quirks of the old building became routine. But then, Mira took a selfie in front of the bedroom mirror to show her new haircut. When she looked at the photo later, she gasped.
In the background, just over her shoulder, there was a shape. It wasn’t human. It had a pale, elongated face with dark hollows for eyes, and its body was a thick, segmented coil, like a worm, ending in a tangle of thin appendages. It hovered in the air, as if suspended from the ceiling.
We stared at the photo for hours, zooming in, trying to convince ourselves it was a trick of light or a piece of clothing. But the details were too sharp. Mira wanted to delete it, but I saved it, thinking we needed to investigate.
A few nights later, I woke up to use the bathroom. The hallway was dark, and the floorboards creaked under my feet. As I passed the living room, I heard a faint humming, like a distant refrigerator, but higher pitched. I peeked in and saw a thin mist hanging in the air near the ceiling. My skin prickled. I flicked on the light, and the mist vanished. The room was warm.
I told Mira about it, and she suggested we check the building’s history. The landlord mentioned it was a textile factory in the 1920s. We found old blueprints online and discovered that our unit had been the main cutting room. There were rumors of workers disappearing under mysterious circumstances, but we laughed them off.
One day, I was in the closet, looking for a suitcase, when I noticed a patch of wall that felt hollow. I knocked, and it let out a dull thud. With a little force, a section of the plaster gave way, revealing a narrow crawlspace. It was dark and smelled of damp earth. I shone my phone’s flashlight inside and saw something glinting at the bottom. I reached in and pulled out a small, rusted metal box. Inside was a yellowed photograph of a man holding a strange device, and a set of hand-written notes on fragile paper.
The notes described experiments with sound frequencies, meant to ‘dislodge the veil’. The writer claimed to have contacted something from ‘the space between’. The last entry was a warning: ‘It feeds on the cold of despair.’ That night, I couldn’t sleep.
A few days later, we had friends over for a housewarming. As we were taking a group photo, my friend’s camera flash went off, and in the resulting image, there was a thin, worm-like shape hovering near the ceiling. No one noticed at the time, but I saw it later. I quietly deleted it before Mira could see.
That night, we argued. I wanted to move out, but Mira thought I was being paranoid. We went to bed angry, but I woke up at 4 AM to find her standing by the window, dressed in a thin nightgown, even though the room was freezing. She was staring outside, but her reflection in the glass was not her own. It was the pale face from the photo. I screamed her name, but she didn’t respond. When I touched her shoulder, she snapped out of it, shivering, and asked why it was so cold.
We decided to go to a hotel for the night. As we packed, I felt a draft from under the floorboards. I knelt down and saw a faint, silvery trail leading from the crawlspace to the bed. It glimmered like a slug’s trace, but it was long and continuous.
We moved out that weekend, leaving most of our belongings behind. We couldn’t bring ourselves to take anything from that place. The landlord was understanding, but he told us that the previous tenants had left after only three months. He said they complained of a ‘cold presence’.
Now, months later, we live in a bright, modern apartment. But sometimes, when I wake at 3 or 4 AM, I feel a chill in the air, and I see a faint, wispy shape at the edge of my vision. I check the windows and the heating, but everything is fine. I know it followed us.
I still have the photo on my phone. I look at it sometimes, trying to understand. But every time I do, the face seems to be closer, and the worm body longer. Last night, as I studied it, I noticed something new: a thin, pale hand reaching out from the shape, as if trying to grasp something. My own hand trembled, and I swear I felt a cold touch on my shoulder.
I can’t sleep with the lights off anymore. And I keep feeling that something is waiting, patient, in the spaces between. I don’t know how long we can outrun it. The cold is a promise, and it always finds its way home.
