The old lodge at Blackwood Creek had stood for generations, a sprawling, timbered monument to a forgotten era, nestled deep within a valley that seemed to drink the sunlight. It was here, during a rare weekend visit, that Elias recounted the unsettling events of the previous day. He had been alone, engrossed in his work in the upstairs study, the only sounds the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall and the distant murmur of the creek. That’s when Bartholomew, their aging Labrador, began to growl, a low rumble that escalated into frantic barking directed at the main entrance.

Elias peered through the thick, leaded glass of the front window. The winding gravel drive was empty, swallowed by the encroaching pines. No car, no person, nothing. He descended the creaking stairs, Bartholomew a whirlwind of distressed barks at the heavy oak door. Again, Elias saw nothing but the indifferent forest. He retreated back to his study, the dog’s agitation a persistent thrum beneath the veneer of normalcy. Moments later, a distinct thud echoed from the hallway, followed by the unmistakable sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps ascending the main staircase. Elias spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. The staircase, bathed in the dim light filtering through the stained-glass landing window, was utterly vacant. He scrambled from his chair, his gaze sweeping the opulent, albeit dusty, room. He was alone.

The tale chilled Elias to the bone, a prickling sensation crawling across his skin. The following weekend, his friend Clara came to stay, eager for a break from the city. Elias, still unnerved, confessed his suspicions about the lodge, hinting at an unseen presence. Clara, ever the pragmatist, dismissed his fears with a knowing smile, attributing it to the isolation and the lodge’s eerie grandeur. That evening, they opted for a double feature of classic gothic horror films, the flickering candlelight casting dancing specters on the walls. By the time the credits rolled, a palpable tension hung in the air, the line between fiction and Elias’s experience blurred. “Perhaps we should try to get some sleep,” Elias suggested, his voice a little too strained. As if on cue, a soft, rhythmic dripping began from the exterior spigot by the old well, followed by the unmistakable sound of running water, a steady, insistent stream that seemed to mock their attempts at rest.
