The old farmhouse had been in Frank’s family for generations, but when he and his wife, Ruth, inherited it, they knew it came with history. Ruth had always been skeptical of the supernatural, but Frank’s grandmother, Eleanor, had been a firm believer. Eleanor had passed away in the winter of ’82, and Frank had never quite shaken the feeling that her presence lingered in these walls.

Frank and Ruth had a daughter, little Lily, born two years after Eleanor’s death. They set up a nursery in the room that used to be Eleanor’s sewing room, and they installed a modern baby monitor with a video screen. Ruth thought it was overkill, but Frank insisted on being able to see Lily at all times.

One night, while Lily was sleeping, the monitor crackled with static. Ruth was in the living room, reading, when she heard a low, guttural sound that didn’t come from Lily. She called for Frank, who was in the study. They both watched the screen as the image flickered, the soft glow of Lily’s nightlight casting strange shapes on the walls. The static grew louder, and then, a shape seemed to materialize at the foot of Lily’s crib. It was tall, impossibly thin, with long, spindly fingers that hovered over the crib railing.

Frank and Ruth rushed upstairs, their hearts pounding. When they burst into the room, Lily was awake, sitting up, and pointing at the corner of the room. But there was nothing there. They calmed her down, and she eventually fell asleep with Ruth beside her. Frank stayed up, staring at the monitor, but the strange shape did not return.

At breakfast the next morning, Lily was unusually quiet. She picked at her oatmeal, then looked up with wide eyes. ‘There was a man in my room last night,’ she said. Frank and Ruth exchanged glances. ‘Who was it, sweetie?’ Ruth asked. Lily pointed to a faded photograph on the wall – a picture of Frank’s uncle, Eleanor’s son, who had died years before Lily was born. ‘Him,’ she said. The name on the frame read ‘Thomas.’

Frank felt a chill run down his spine. Thomas had died in a tragic car accident in 1965, and his mother, Eleanor, had never fully recovered. But how could Lily know his name? They had never told her about him. Ruth, however, dismissed it as a child’s imagination, but Frank couldn’t shake the feeling that his grandmother’s spirit had something to do with this.

Over the next few weeks, the strange occurrences intensified. The monitor would flicker at night, and Lily would talk to ‘Thomas’ in her sleep. Frank began researching the history of the house, and he discovered that Thomas had often played in that room as a child. He also found an old journal of Eleanor’s, where she wrote about her son’s visits to her after his death. She believed he came to her as a guardian, not a ghost.

One night, Frank decided to confront the presence. He set up a tape recorder and an old ham radio that Eleanor had used to communicate with her brother, who was a radio operator during the war. As the clock struck midnight, the radio crackled with static, and a voice whispered through the speakers. It was Eleanor’s voice, saying, ‘Let him in, Frank. He means no harm.’

Frank felt a warm presence beside him, and he saw a faint, translucent figure of an elderly woman – Eleanor. She pointed to the door, where a taller, younger silhouette stood. ‘Thomas was always protective of Lily,’ Eleanor said. ‘He doesn’t want her to be afraid.’

Frank realized then that these apparitions were not demonic, but familial. Thomas had been watching over Lily, and the static on the monitor was his way of communicating. He had been trying to let them know he was there, but his presence was distorted by the technology.

From that night on, the strange events stopped, but Frank and Ruth kept the monitor on, listening to the faint, comforting static. They knew that in the whispers and bursts of noise, there was a guardian in their home. And whenever the static seemed to form a gentle, rumbling laughter, they would smile, knowing that Thomas was there, watching over them all. The end.
