The summer of 2015 was the hottest in a decade, and my parents had decided to take a rare weekend trip to visit my aunt in the city, leaving me and my older brother, Damien, alone in our cramped apartment. The building was old, with creaking pipes and a persistent hum from the faulty wiring that no one ever bothered to fix. That hum was the soundtrack to our boredom.

Damien was sprawled on the couch, glued to some reality show, while I, Lena, tried to escape the heat by taking a long, cold shower. The water pressure was weak, a pathetic drizzle that barely rinsed the shampoo from my hair. When I was finally done, I wrapped myself in a thin towel and stepped out into the hall, my bare feet sticking to the worn linoleum.

‘Damien, grab me a clean towel from the closet!’ I yelled, my voice echoing down the narrow corridor. There was no response, just the muffled sound of the TV. I called again, louder this time, and that’s when the kitchen lights began to flicker. Not a quick, normal flicker, but a slow, deliberate pulse, like they were breathing. The dining room chandelier, which had a loose bulb we always forgot to fix, started to swing gently, casting dancing shadows on the peeling wallpaper.

My heart pounded against my ribs. I stood frozen in the hallway, dripping water onto the floor, my eyes darting between the lights and the chandelier. Then I heard it—a rattling sound from the kitchen. I tiptoed forward, my wet footsteps leaving a trail, and saw an empty plastic water bottle, the one I had left on the counter, rise from the table and hurtle into the wall with a sharp thud. It landed on the floor, spinning in a lazy circle.

‘Damien, this isn’t funny!’ I yelled, my voice cracking. I quickly shoved my legs into a pair of shorts and pulled on a t-shirt, my hands shaking as I fumbled with the fabric. I stormed into the living room, ready to tear into him, but Damien was still on the couch, his eyes glued to the TV, a bag of chips on his lap.

‘What?’ he said, looking up at me with a blank expression. I recounted what had just happened, the flickering lights, the swinging chandelier, the flying bottle. He stared at me for a moment, then shook his head slowly.

‘I didn’t do anything,’ he said, his voice low and serious. ‘I’ve been sitting here the whole time. The TV didn’t even glitch.’

I felt a cold knot tighten in my stomach. I looked around the room, at the normal scene, the bags of chips, the remote, the dusty ceiling fan. And then I realized the hum, that constant, annoying hum from the wiring, was gone. The silence felt heavy, oppressive. And in that silence, I heard a faint, almost imperceptible creaking from the hallway, like someone was slowly walking toward the bathroom door.

Damien turned pale. He had heard it too. We both stared at the hallway, waiting for something to emerge. The air grew thick, and the temperature seemed to drop. Then, just as suddenly, the hum returned, a low, buzzing drone, and the lights flickered once more, a single, sharp pulse, before returning to normal. The chandelier stopped swinging, and the bottle lay still on the floor.

Neither of us said a word. We just sat there, side by side on the couch, listening to the hum, afraid to move, afraid to speak. Since that day, the hum has never been the same. Every now and then, it changes pitch, a slight wobble, like a voice trying to break through static. And I swear, sometimes, when I’m alone in the apartment, I can hear a soft thud from the kitchen, as if something invisible has just thrown an empty bottle against the wall.
