I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve woken to that presence, that soft pressure beside me on the mattress. It started long before the blood test confirmed what I already suspected—that I was carrying a life that anchored me to this world in ways I couldn’t understand. I would lie on my side, breathing slow and steady, and feel the faint dip of the bed beside me, as if someone had just sat down. My eyes would snap open, but the room would be empty, the air still. I told myself it was just the house settling, the creak of old bones in a rental apartment that had seen too many tenants. But the feeling persisted, growing bolder each night until I couldn’t deny it any longer.

Two nights ago, I drifted into a sleep so deep it felt like sinking into warm water. I was on my side, my knees tucked toward my chest, and I had finally let go of the day’s tensions—the demanding boss, the endless bills, the gnawing worry about the future. But then, the familiar weight returned. At first, it was just a tickle, like static electricity dancing across my skin. Then, I felt it: a warm palm, soft and gentle, brushing the nape of my neck. The touch was tender, almost loving, and I wanted to turn to see who it was, but my body was a stone. I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, couldn’t even open my eyes. My heart hammered against my ribs, and I tried to pray, mouthing the words in my mind: ‘Lord, protect me.’ But the hand didn’t hurt me. It moved in slow circles, stroking my hair, my shoulder, as if soothing a frightened child. I felt a wave of calm wash over me, despite my terror. It was like being held by someone who knew every sorrow I carried—the loneliness, the fear, the weight of new life growing inside me. And then, as suddenly as it came, the touch vanished, replaced by a faint crackle of blue sparks at the edge of my vision. I forced my leg to move, then my arm, and I sat up gasping. The sparks faded like dying fireflies, leaving only the dark and the hum of the city outside.

I’ve had these encounters before—I’ve awakened to that presence countless times, never sure if it was a dream or something real. But this time was different. This time, I felt it consoling me, not threatening. I’ve been through a week of trials: the breakup, the eviction notice, the fear of raising a child alone. And now, this… this thing, whatever it is, seems to be a guardian rather than a demon. But I can’t shake the cold dread that settles in my stomach when I think about what it could be. What does it want from me? Why does it come only when I’m most vulnerable? And what does it have to do with the little life stirring inside me?

I remember my grandmother’s stories about spirits that attach themselves to pregnant women—beings that crave the energy of new life, feeding on the mother’s fears and hopes. She called them ‘the silent watchers,’ and she warned me never to acknowledge their presence aloud, lest they take that as an invitation. But I’ve already broken that rule, haven’t I? I’ve named it in my thoughts, wondered about it, let it become a part of my nightly routine. Last night, I woke up and felt it again, but this time, it was different. I felt a cold hand rest on my belly, where my child grows. And I heard a voice—soft, like a whisper through static—saying, ‘I will watch over you both.’ I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t. I just lay there, paralyzed, feeling the weight of that hand, the wrongness of it. And then it was gone, and the room was empty.

Now it’s morning, and the sun is streaming through the blinds. I should feel safe, but I don’t. I keep looking at my stomach, at the small bump that’s just beginning to show. I wonder if the creature I’ve felt all those nights is inside me now, or if it’s just waiting outside, patient, preparing for the moment when it can finally speak to me face to face. I don’t know what I’m more afraid of: that this is all in my head, or that it’s real. But I do know one thing: I can’t run from it. It’s already woven itself into the fabric of my existence, a thread of static in the silence of my nights. And whatever it is, it’s not leaving me until I understand why it chose me.
