Last summer, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Max, our golden retriever. It was sudden, unexpected. One day, he was running through the yard, chasing birds, and the next, he was gone. The house felt empty without him. His favorite spot by the door looked so lifeless.

Three nights after he passed, as I lay in bed, I heard it. The soft jingle of his collar. The faint click of his nails against the hardwood floor. My heart raced. I sat up, holding my breath, straining to listen.

Nothing.

I told myself it was just my grief playing tricks on me. But the next night, it happened again. And this time, my husband heard it too.

Then, one evening, as we were watching TV, something happened that neither of us can explain.

A shape darted past the living room doorway. It was fast—so fast that at first, I thought I imagined it. But my husband jumped up at the same time I did.

“Did you see that?” he whispered.

I nodded, my heart pounding.

We rushed to the hallway, our eyes scanning the dimly lit space. There was nothing there. But then, just as we turned to go back, a blur of golden fur streaked past us, heading straight for the back door.

For a split second, we saw it—Max. His tail high, his body moving in that same joyful run we knew so well. But there was something… off. We couldn’t see his head. Just his back, his legs, his tail. And then—he was gone.

We stood there, frozen. The house was silent again, except for the distant sound of the wind outside.

My husband swallowed hard. “Did we just…?”

I nodded again, tears stinging my eyes.

That night, I opened my laptop and wrote a letter to Max. I poured my heart into it, telling him how much I missed him, how much I wished I could see him one last time. At the end, I wrote, I hope you’re still running, wherever you are.

The moment I typed the last word, my screen flickered. The entire document vanished.

I searched everywhere. Checked auto-saves. Nothing. It was like the letter had never existed.

Since that night, we haven’t seen Max again. But sometimes, when the house is quiet, I still hear it—the faint sound of paws against the floor, the soft jingle of his collar.

Maybe he was trying to tell us he’s still here. Or maybe, he was just doing what he always loved—running, just beyond the world we can see.
