The night had a strange weight to it, as if the air itself was waiting for something to happen. I was alone with my husky, Koda, and my old retriever, Max. My mom was on a late shift at the hospital, so the house was quieter than usual, save for the soft hum of the refrigerator and the patter of rain against the windows. I decided to do the dishes to pass the time, and Koda trotted in with me, his nails clicking on the linoleum. Max was asleep in the living room, dreaming of rabbits, his legs twitching occasionally.

As I scrubbed a stubborn pan, Koda let out a low growl. I ignored it at first, thinking he heard a raccoon outside or maybe a neighbor’s cat. He growled again, deeper this time, and I felt a chill run down my spine. I turned to tell him to stop, but he was staring at the French doors that led to the backyard. His body was tense, his ears flat against his head, and his gaze was locked on the dark glass.

I followed his line of sight and felt my blood run cold. Through the rain-streaked glass, a figure stood on the patio, just a few feet away. It was a man, tall and gaunt, wearing a long, dark coat that dripped with water. He wasn’t moving, just standing there, his face obscured by the shadows and the rain. There was something profoundly wrong about him, a stillness that felt unnatural, like a predator waiting for the right moment to strike.

My heart pounded in my chest. I wanted to scream, but my voice was stuck in my throat. I grabbed Koda’s collar, pulling him back from the door, and for a moment, I thought I saw the figure tilt its head, as if acknowledging our presence. Then, as quickly as it appeared, it was gone. The patio was empty, nothing but the rain and the swaying of the trees in the wind.

I stood there for what felt like an eternity, my hand shaking on Koda’s collar. Max stirred in the living room, letting out a soft whine, as if he sensed something was wrong. I finally managed to move, drawing the curtains over the doors and backing away. I called my mom, but she didn’t answer, no doubt too busy with her shift. I tried to convince myself that it was just a trick of the light, a reflection, anything. But the image of that silent man burned in my mind.

The next morning, I went outside to check the patio. There was a puddle of water right where the man had been standing, but it hadn’t rained since. I noticed the soil beneath it was disturbed, as if something heavy had been there. I tried to forget about it, but Koda refused to go near the back door for days. He would sit in the hallway, staring at the kitchen, a low growl rumbling in his chest at odd hours. And sometimes, when I looked out the window, I could swear I saw a shadow moving between the trees, watching the house, waiting for me to let my guard down.
