In a land of dense forests, the elders warned that after sunset, one must keep their thoughts pure. A time of great hunger had fallen upon the people, and a handful of young friends decided to venture out. They had heard of a grove where banana trees grew heavy with fruit.

Under the dim moonlight, they found the trees. They scrambled up the trunks, filling their shirts with the yellow fruit. Suddenly, one of them shouted a single, fearful word. In an instant, they all dropped to the earth and fled.

As they ran, a girl heard a voice from ahead telling her not to turn around. But a sudden noise from behind made her glance over her shoulder. She saw a tall, pale figure standing perfectly still, its features twisted into something unnatural. A cold dread filled her.

She stumbled, scraping her knees on the rough path. One of her friends turned back, grabbed her arm, and pulled her forward. They did not stop running until the lights of their homes were in sight.

Days later, the girl who had looked back fell into a deep sickness. Her strength faded, and her skin grew pale and thin. She remained in her bed for a long time, a quiet reminder of the shadow in the grove.
