My brother Leo lived in a small apartment near his college campus. His home had a large window that looked out onto a quiet lane, but a tall oak tree pressed its branches against the glass, blocking most of the view.
Whenever we spoke on the phone, his voice would shake as he described strange shadows moving in the corners of his rooms. I never took his stories seriously and thought he was just imagining things. After many weeks of him asking, I decided to go see him.
He greeted me at the door and I stepped inside. A sudden chill made me shiver as I looked down the narrow hallway. Leo showed me around, opening doors to empty cabinets and pointing out the quiet neighborhood. He hoped I might stay with him.
When he opened the door to a small storage room, a cold feeling swept over me. I asked him to shut it immediately. A strong thought came to me that a great sadness had once filled that little space.
