Elara had always dismissed her daughter, Lyra’s, tales of a “friend” who lived in the attic. Lyra, a bright five-year-old, would describe this invisible companion with an unnerving detail that shifted with every telling. One moment, the friend was a tall, kindly woman; the next, a giggling, disembodied hand. Elara, a pragmatic woman who dealt in spreadsheets and deadlines, attributed it to an overactive imagination, a byproduct of too many fairy tales.

But then came the incident with the antique music box. It was a delicate, porcelain thing Elara kept on a high shelf in the living room, a relic from her own grandmother, strictly off-limits to Lyra. Elara found it that evening on the floor, the intricate mechanism mangled, its delicate melody silenced forever. Lyra stood over it, tears streaming down her face, a faint, cloying scent of lilies hanging heavy in the air. When Elara demanded to know what happened, Lyra sobbed, “He made me, Mommy. The attic friend. He said if I didn’t break it, he’d never let me sleep again. He has bad rules.”

A chill, unrelated to the evening breeze seeping through the poorly sealed windows, snaked up Elara’s spine. She had warned Lyra about the attic before; it was a dusty, forgotten space, its door usually jammed shut. “Lyra,” Elara said, her voice steadier than she felt, “this friend of yours is not welcome here. He needs to go away. Tell him to leave.”

Lyra’s small face crumpled. “But he won’t go,” she whispered, her gaze fixed on the ceiling, as if addressing someone Elara couldn’t see. “He says he’s already inside. And he smells like lilies now. Everywhere.”
