Milo had heard the family legend, but he’d always dismissed it as old wives’ tales spun from grief and shock. His great-aunt Vera, a long-haul trucker with her husband, had supposedly vanished into thin air after a doctor’s appointment. His grandmother swore she’d smelled roses on a snowbound winter’s day, a scent that had no business existing outside of memory.

Decades later, Milo found himself in a similar thread of events. He was a cartographer, mapping the remote stretches of the Cascades for a geological survey. He’d been alone for weeks, holed up in a ranger station that was more a collection of rusted nails and lonely silence than a building. A routine call to his sister, Elena, had confirmed he was overdue for his weekly check-in, but the radio was dead, and the satellite phone had lost signal in a freak storm that had rolled in overnight.

As he sat in the dim light of a kerosene lamp, a strange fragrance began to permeate the room. It was sweet, cloying, and somehow unnatural. He assumed it was a leak from the old heater’s fuel, but as he searched, he found no source. The scent grew stronger, filling his lungs with a cold that had nothing to do with the temperature. He gagged, recognizing the smell: it was lilies, the kind that grew only in the highest meadows, the ones that bloomed in a single, eerie night under a full moon.

Then the knocking began. Three precise raps on the door, as if someone was using their knuckles. He froze, his heart hammering. No one could reach him here; the nearest town was six hours drive over unplowed roads. He ignored it. The knocking grew more insistent, and then a voice, thin and papery, like wind through dead leaves, whispered through the wood: ‘Milo, let me in. I have your maps.’

He didn’t open the door. He watched through the frosted window as a figure stood outside, drenched in moonlight, wearing a familiar jacket—his own, the one he’d lost weeks ago. He grabbed his rifle, but the figure just stood there, and the scent of lilies intensified until it was almost suffocating. He blacked out.

When he woke, the door was ajar, and the snow on the ground was pristine, unbroken. The scent was gone, but in its place was a single, perfect lily lying on the floor, its petals impossibly vibrant, its stem cut cleanly as if by a knife. He picked it up, and a wave of vertigo hit him. He saw his own face reflected in the petal, but years older, gaunt, with eyes that held the hollow emptiness of the miles.

He knew then, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that his grandmother’s story wasn’t just a tale. It was a warning. And he had been heedless, and now the lilies had found him, and they would not let him go until they had taken the last mile of his soul.
