Elara was meticulously mincing herbs in the dimly lit pantry, the late afternoon sun casting long, distorted shadows through the grimy windowpane. A sudden, unnatural chill permeated the air, prickling her skin. “Lars, darling, could you coax the hearth back to life? It’s gone dreadfully cold in here,” she called out, her voice a little thinner than usual. A moment later, the familiar warmth of the crackling fire filled the adjoining room. “Thank you, love,” she murmured, returning to her task.

She was arranging the last of the salad leaves when a figure glided past the pantry doorway, its form indistinct yet undeniably present. “Lars?” she called, a tremor entering her voice. The figure didn’t respond. “LARS!” she insisted, louder this time.

Upstairs, in the dusty attic den, Lars and his friend, Finn, were engrossed in an ancient film. It was Elara’s voice, strained and distant, that finally pulled Lars from the flickering screen. “What is it, Mother?” he shouted, leaning over the worn railing of the loft stairs. He saw her, a pale, bewildered figure at the foot of the staircase.

“But… you’re here,” she stammered, her eyes wide with a dawning horror. “You were just downstairs.”

Lars frowned, a cold dread seizing him. “No, Mother. I’ve been upstairs with Finn the entire afternoon. I haven’t been downstairs at all.” The realization struck them both simultaneously, a chilling certainty that neither of them had been the one to ignite the hearth. The sudden absence of explanation, the impossible presence, sent a shiver that had nothing to do with the room’s temperature.

It wasn’t the first oddity. For years, when the tide was particularly high and the moon veiled, they had sometimes seen spectral galleons drift past the cliffside house – hulking, silent behemoths of a bygone era, their tattered sails catching no wind. Elara, a woman of firm logic, dismissed them as tricks of the light, but even she couldn’t entirely suppress the unease they evoked.

Then came the crows. Not one or two, but dozens, their obsidian forms appearing on the barren treeline each dawn. They wouldn’t caw or stir, simply watch the house with unnerving stillness. One by one, they began to fall. Not from illness, but as if struck by an invisible force, landing with soft thuds in the dew-kissed grass. By the third day, the lawn was a morbid carpet of iridescent black feathers and glassy eyes. The air grew heavy, thick with a scent like stagnant sea brine and something else, something metallic and foul. Elara’s sensible shoes sank into the yielding earth as she ventured out, her breath catching in her throat. The silence of the birds was more terrifying than any shriek. And then, from the shadowed eaves of the old boathouse, a single, skeletal hand, slick with seawater, began to emerge from the rotting wood.
