The old Victorian house, known locally as Blackwood Manor, was far from welcoming. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating a perpetual gloom. Inside, four friends found themselves seeking refuge from a storm that raged outside, its fury mirroring the unease that had begun to settle within the manor’s oppressive walls. Elara and Finn were huddled in the master bedroom, a room choked with the scent of decaying potpourri and forgotten lives. Across the hall, Maya occupied the cavernous drawing-room, her back to the grand, oak-paneled doors that led to the east wing. Barnaby, ever the practical one, was in the adjoining library, a space dominated by shelves of leather-bound tomes that seemed to watch him with ancient, unblinking eyes. The doors to the east wing were known to stick, often propped shut with a heavy antique walking stick.

A sudden, frantic scratching erupted from behind the east wing doors, a sound like desperate claws tearing at wood. It was accompanied by a low, guttural whine, a sound wholly unlike anything they had ever heard from the manor’s resident stray cat, which usually slept in the dusty pantry adjoining the library. Maya, her face a mask of terror, scrambled towards the drawing-room entrance, her eyes wide with disbelief. Barnaby, his knuckles white, gripped a heavy brass candlestick, his gaze fixed on the library door. Elara, a knot of dread tightening in her stomach, crept into the drawing-room just as the walking stick clattered to the floor and the imposing oak doors creaked inward, revealing an abyssal darkness that seemed to swallow the faint light.
Maya was gone. Vanished. The scratching had ceased, replaced by an unnerving silence that pressed in on their eardrums. A collective whimper rose from Elara and Finn, their faces pale and drawn. Barnaby, his bravado shattered, stumbled backward, knocking over a small table laden with porcelain figurines. They retreated to the dimly lit foyer, their breath catching in their throats, the urge to scream warring with the ingrained fear of disturbing the manor’s spectral inhabitants, if any such comfort could be found there. But the scratching had been too real, too visceral. They huddled together, their backs pressed against the peeling wallpaper, their eyes drawn to the now-open maw of the east wing.
A fleeting movement caught Elara’s eye. In the dust-streaked window at the far end of the east wing corridor, a figure, tall and gaunt, paced back and forth with a disturbing, jerky gait. Its form was indistinct, obscured by the swirling dust and the unnatural gloom, but the rhythmic movement was undeniably there. A cold dread, sharp and piercing, washed over them. They stumbled back towards the foyer, their hearts hammering against their ribs, the image of the pacing figure seared into their minds. The silence of Blackwood Manor now felt like a coiled serpent, waiting to strike.
