The Rotating Screen

Mara had always felt watched in the old farmhouse on Cedar Lane. It wasn’t just the creaking floorboards or the way the wind moaned through the eaves; it was the pressure of unseen eyes, the sensation of a cold breath on her neck when she was alone. Her parents dismissed it as teenage imagination, but Mara knew better. Something else lived here, something that had been with them since they moved in three months ago.

Last night, at 4:30 AM, Mara woke from a dream of a sun-drenched beach. The dream had shifted abruptly, dissolving into a perfect replica of her living room. She stood in the center, the familiar floral sofa, the dusty bookshelf, the heavy oak TV stand. The television, a massive 65-inch model that had taken her father and uncle to haul inside, was playing static. Suddenly, the screen went black and began to rotate—impossibly, mechanically—until it faced the wall, a full 90 degrees. In the dream, she felt a surge of dread. She tried to move, but her limbs were leaden.

Then a violent jolt snapped her into wakefulness. She was in her bed, the room pitch black. A weight pressed down on her chest, and she couldn’t move a muscle. Her arms were pinned to her sides, her legs locked together. The pressure wasn’t just confinement; it was a rhythmic shaking, her entire body vibrating up and down as if a giant hand was gripping her. She tried to scream, but a cold, invisible force clamped her mouth shut. Her eyes darted to the corner of the room, where a darker shape seemed to pulse. This was no ordinary sleep paralysis. She could feel its malevolence, its ancient hunger.

Tears streamed down her face as the shaking intensified, rattling her teeth. She managed to focus her thoughts, recalling the stories her grandmother had told her about the land—how it was built on a forgotten burial ground, how the spirits of the displaced were restless. She thought of the other presence, the one that sometimes whispered her name from the hallway. Were they two different entities, or one that wore many faces? In that moment, she realized they were not alone.

As suddenly as it began, the shaking stopped. The pressure lifted, and she could breathe. Gasping, she rolled to her side, her body trembling from adrenaline. But before she could fully recover, a whisper slithered into her ear, dry and cold like winter leaves: ‘You shouldn’t have come.’ And then, from the living room, she heard a heavy thud, as if something massive had fallen over.

Mara lay frozen, her heart pounding, listening to the silence that followed. She knew this was only the beginning. The hauntings were not separate events; they were orchestrated by a single, terrible will that had claimed this house as its own. And tonight, it had made its presence known with a clarity that could not be denied. She pulled the covers over her head, whispering a prayer, but she felt the cold seep through the blanket, and she knew nothing would ever be the same.
