My brother and I were inseparable as kids. We shared secrets, laughter, and countless nights of whispered games after our parents tucked us in. I never told him about my fears, though. It was my burden to carry alone.

Our bedroom was a cramped attic space, filled with mismatched furniture and the lingering smell of mothballs. The centerpiece was a heavy wooden bed that dominated the room, and beneath it, a trundle mattress I usually slid out for myself. One night, I woke with a start, the digital clock glowing 3:00 AM. The silence was thick, broken only by my brother’s steady breathing from the bed above.

I decided to scan the room, a habit to ward off the dark. My gaze passed over the cluttered desk, the overflowing bookshelf, and then stopped at the old rocking chair in the corner. A shape sat there, unmoving. It was a figure, translucent and faint, like a smear of fog against the shadows. My heart hammered, but I couldn’t look away.

It was a woman, or rather, the suggestion of one. Her features were blurred, but I could make out long hair that seemed to drift in a nonexistent breeze. She wore a long, outdated dress that pooled around the chair’s legs. And she was rocking, ever so slightly, back and forth, back and forth.

I wanted to scream, to wake my brother, but my voice was frozen. The figure turned its head toward me, and even without distinct eyes, I felt its attention. It raised a hand, finger pressed to where its lips might have been, a universal gesture of silence. Then, it resumed rocking.

I lay there, paralyzed, for what felt like hours. The rocking continued, a rhythmic creak that seemed to sync with my own heartbeat. Eventually, exhaustion claimed me, and I slipped back into a restless sleep.

When I woke, sunlight streamed through the dusty window. The rocking chair was empty. I told myself it was a half-remembered dream, a trick of the light. But the next night, I saw it again, in the same spot, rocking gently. And the night after that.

Now, I am an adult, but I still live in that house. My brother moved away years ago. Every night at 3:00 AM, I wake, and I go to the attic, and I sit in that rocking chair. The translucent woman is always there, waiting for me. We rock together, in silence. She never speaks, but I understand her now. She is the keeper of all the fears I never voiced, and she will never let me leave this room.
