For the past three months, I’ve been waking up at 3:17 AM every single night. Not with a start, not from a nightmare, but like someone gently nudged my consciousness awake. It’s the same time, to the minute, every night. I’ve checked my phone, I’ve checked the clock on my nightstand. It’s always 3:17. At first, I thought it was just a weird coincidence, but now I’m starting to think something else is going on.

I live in an old farmhouse on the edge of a small town, surrounded by cornfields that stretch for miles. My grandmother left it to me when she passed, and I moved here to escape the noise of the city. The house has its quirks—the stairs creak, the windows rattle in the wind, and there’s a smell of old wood and dust that never quite goes away. But I’ve always felt safe here. That was before the night I first saw the figure.

It was a Tuesday, I remember that. I’d had a long day at work, and I was looking forward to a quiet evening. I made some tea, settled into my armchair with a book, and tried to doze off early. Around 3:17 AM, I woke up to find myself staring at the ceiling. I could feel a weight on my chest, but it wasn’t a heavy weight. It was more like a presence, a pressure, as if something were lying on top of me. I tried to move, but my body felt paralyzed. I couldn’t turn my head, couldn’t blink, could barely even breathe. I saw a dark shape at the foot of my bed, barely visible in the dim light from the hallway. It was tall, thin, and had a head that seemed too large for its body. It didn’t move. It just stood there, watching me.

I’ve heard stories about sleep paralysis, of course. People see shadowy figures, feel a crushing weight on their chest, and it feels so real. But when I finally managed to blink, the figure was gone. The weight lifted, and I could move again. I sat up, my heart pounding, and turned on the lamp. There was nothing there. I convinced myself it was just a vivid dream, a product of my overactive imagination. But the next night, at 3:17 AM, it happened again. And the night after that. And the night after that.

Now, I’ve started to dread going to bed. I put off sleeping for as long as I can, staying up late watching TV, scrolling through my phone, anything to avoid that moment when the clock hits 3:17. But it always catches me. I’ve tried sleeping with the lights on, tried sleeping in different rooms, tried staying awake until dawn. It doesn’t matter. At 3:17, I’m awake. And the figure is there.

But it’s not just the seeing that terrifies me. It’s the whispering. At first, I thought it was just the wind outside, or the old house settling. But there’s a pattern to it, a rhythm. It sounds like someone speaking in a language I don’t understand, but I can feel it pulling at me, trying to get my attention. Sometimes, I catch words that sound like my name. Sometimes, I hear my grandmother’s voice calling me, telling me to come to her. But when I try to follow the voice, I find myself standing in the hallway, the door to the basement slightly ajar. And the voice is coming from down there.

Last night, I finally gathered the courage to answer the call. I put on my robe, grabbed a flashlight, and slowly made my way down the basement steps. The air grew colder with each step, and the smell of damp earth and mold grew stronger. At the bottom, I found something I hadn’t noticed before: a locked door at the far end. I stood in front of it, my hands trembling, and listened. Behind the door, I heard breathing. Slow, deep, and rhythmic. I turned the knob, but it wouldn’t budge. Then, without warning, the door swung open on its own.

Inside, there was a short corridor, ending in a small room lit by a single naked bulb. In the center of the room stood a worn wooden chair, and in that chair sat a figure. It was the same shape I’d seen at the foot of my bed, but now it was more solid, more real. Its head was tilted down, and when it lifted it, I saw that it had no face—just a smooth expanse of skin where features should have been. But then it started to speak. Not with a mouth, but from all around me, as if the room itself were talking. ‘You’ve come at last,’ it said. ‘I’ve been waiting for you.’

I tried to run, to climb back up the stairs, but my legs wouldn’t move. I was rooted to the spot, the flashlight beam shaking in my hand. ‘Don’t be frightened,’ the voice continued, ‘I have walked this earth for centuries, watching over this land. I have seen empires rise and fall, plagues sweep across continents, and wars that devoured millions. And through it all, I have waited for a worthy successor to unlock the truth.’ It gestured to the chair, which was now glowing faintly. ‘Sit. The time has come.’

I don’t know what came over me, but I felt a strange peace, a calm surrender. I walked forward and sat in the chair. The bulb flickered, and the light went out. In the darkness, I felt hands on my shoulders, pressing me down into the seat. I heard my grandmother’s voice whisper in my ear, ‘It’s okay, my child. Let go.’ And then, I felt a sharp pain in my temple, and everything went black.

When I woke up this morning, I was back in my bed, the sunlight streaming through the curtains. I checked the clock: it was 7:23 AM. I felt different—lighter, as if some weight had been lifted from me. And for the first time in months, I’d slept through the night without waking at 3:17. I was relieved, thinking it was over. But as I went to the bathroom, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. The reflection showed me, but there was something wrong with it. It took me a moment to realize what it was: my reflection had no face.
