Agnes had always collected trinkets, but her latest acquisition from a dusty estate sale had a peculiar allure. Nestled among tarnished silverware and moth-eaten tapestries were a dozen antique porcelain dolls, their painted eyes seeming to hold secrets from a bygone era. She’d arranged them on her antique mahogany dresser, their stiff limbs and vacant stares a curious tableau in the dim lamplight of her bedroom. It was a humid Tuesday night, the kind where the air hangs thick and still.

Agnes, a woman whose years had etched wisdom and a touch of stubbornness onto her face, found herself disoriented by a faint scratching sound emanating from downstairs. It wasn’t the usual settling of the old house. It was deliberate, rhythmic. Curiosity, a trait that had often led her down less-than-prudent paths, propelled her out of bed. Clutching her silver-topped walking stick, she made her way to the landing, the floorboards groaning under her weight.

As she peered into the semi-darkness of the living room, her breath hitched. Seated at the edge of the room, bathed in the moonlight filtering through the bay window, was a small girl. She was dressed in a faded, old-fashioned pinafore, her back to Agnes. A single, high-pitched giggle, like the tinkling of tiny bells, cut through the silence. Agnes’s heart hammered against her ribs. She cleared her throat, her voice trembling slightly. “Who… who are you? How did you get in here?”

The child didn’t turn. Instead, she slowly, deliberately, reached out a porcelain hand and picked up one of the dolls from Agnes’s collection, a doll with startlingly blue glass eyes. The child’s head then tilted back, and Agnes saw that one side of the child’s face was marred by a dark, festering scar, as if it had been brutally burned and never healed. The doll’s painted smile seemed to stretch into a leering grin. The child’s unblemished eye, a perfect replica of the doll’s, fixed on Agnes. A cold dread, far more potent than any phantom fear, washed over her.

Before Agnes could utter another word, the child stood, the doll still clutched in her small hand. She didn’t walk away. She simply… dissolved. The moonlight seemed to swallow her, leaving only the unsettling stillness and the faint scent of ozone and decay. Agnes stumbled back, her mind reeling, her grip tightening on her cane. She turned to retreat to the perceived safety of her bedroom, but as she did, a profound chilling sensation, like icy tendrils, crept up her spine. Behind her, from the very spot where the child had stood, she felt it: a distinct, unwavering gaze. The porcelain dolls on the dresser, now bathed in a different angle of moonlight, seemed to be watching her, their painted eyes gleaming with an ancient, predatory hunger.
