My friend Leo told me a story that I can’t shake. It happened on a freezing November night in the small town of Raven’s Hollow, where the streets were lined with old oaks and the only light came from the amber glow of porch lamps. Leo was sitting in his car, a rusted ’87 sedan he’d inherited from his grandfather, outside his girlfriend’s place. They were talking on the phone, huddled against the cold, and he’d decided to sit in the passenger seat, just to keep warm, while the engine idled.

As he talked, he glanced at the rearview mirror, and that’s when he saw him. A man, old, with a face as pale as the frost on the windshield. His nose was thin and sharp, his skin clean-shaven, and his eyes were dark, almost black, like bottomless pits. Leo didn’t recognize him. He felt a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. He turned around, but the backseat was empty. A wave of terror washed over him, and he scrambled out of the car, leaving the door ajar, and sprinted for the house.

He didn’t stop until he was inside, his heart pounding against his ribs. He looked back through the window, and there he saw the man’s face pressed against the driver side window, his dark eyes fixed on Leo, his lips twisted into a grimace. Leo’s blood ran cold. He yelled for his parents, but by the time they came, the man was gone. They searched the yard, the street, but found nothing. They dismissed it as a trick of the light, a figment of his imagination, but Leo knew what he saw.

That night, Leo couldn’t sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw that face. He told me that he could draw it with perfect detail, even now, years later. And the weirdest part? A few days after, he found an old photograph in his grandfather’s belongings. In it, his grandfather, who had passed away ten years before, was standing with a man he’d never seen. The man in the photo had the same pale face, the same narrow nose, the same dark eyes. Leo swears it was the same man.

He never sat in that car again. He sold it, but the image stayed with him. And I believe him, because I saw the fear in his eyes when he told me. Sometimes, when I’m alone at night, I catch a glimpse of something in my peripheral vision, and I remember his story, and I can’t help but wonder if that old man is still out there, waiting for someone to look in the rearview mirror one too many times.
