Some of you may recall my earlier tales about the ghostly figure at the old railway bridge in Crofton, where the tracks cross the river at the edge of town. If you haven’t read those, I recommend you do so before reading this, for context. Since that time, I had not seen the apparition or experienced anything out of the ordinary—nothing until last month. Hence, I return to this forum to share my recent experiences, though I remain a skeptic at heart.

I moved a few years ago to a small cottage on the outskirts of Crofton, not far from the bridge, which is visible from my kitchen window—a fact I’ve never mentioned before for privacy reasons. The bridge, constructed in the 1890s, has always had a reputation among locals. Some say it’s haunted by the spirit of a worker who fell during its construction; others claim it’s a portent of death. I’ve always dismissed such talk as folklore.

My first encounter occurred on a damp October evening. I was sitting by the window, watching the rain, when I noticed a pale figure standing on the bridge, looking down at the water. It was tall and gaunt, draped in a long coat that seemed to absorb the faint light from the streetlamps. As I watched, it slowly turned its head toward my house, and though I couldn’t see its eyes, I felt a chilling gaze bore into me. Then, as quickly as it appeared, it vanished, leaving only the rain and the swaying trees.

I told myself it was a trick of the light, a homeless person seeking shelter, but something about the figure felt wrong. The following week, I saw it again, this time closer, standing at the edge of my property. I called out, but it remained motionless, its head tilted as if listening. When I stepped forward, it retreated to the bridge and disappeared in the mist that rose from the river. My skepticism began to waver.

Determined to get to the bottom of this, I researched the bridge’s history. I found an old newspaper article from 1902 about a woman named Eleanor who drowned in the river near the bridge. She was a seamstress, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and her body was never found. Locals claimed her ghost haunted the area, but the story faded over time. I wondered if the figure I saw was her, but it seemed taller and more masculine.

One night, I decided to confront the apparition. I armed myself with a flashlight and a voice recorder, hoping to capture evidence. As I approached the bridge, the air grew cold, and I heard a faint whispering, like leaves skittering across stone. Then I saw it: the figure was not alone. Behind it, a procession of other pale figures emerged from the darkness, all wearing old-fashioned clothes, their faces blank. They moved in unison, as if bound by an unseen force.

I heard a voice, soft and pleading, ‘Help us… Find her…’ It was a woman’s voice, and I realized it came from the lead figure, who now turned to face me fully. Her features were gaunt, her eyes hollow, and her lips moved as she spoke again: ‘Eleanor… She is lost… We are tethered to her…’ I stumbled backward, my flashlight trembling. The figures began to advance, and I fled, not stopping until I reached my door.

Since that night, I have not seen them, but I feel their presence. Strange things have happened: cold spots in my house, my belongings moved, and a persistent draft from a window that is always shut. I’ve also found small objects—a thimble, a button, a child’s toy—placed on my doorstep, as if offerings. I’ve tried to ignore them, but the encounters have left me shaken.

I write this not to convince anyone of the supernatural, but to document what I have experienced. Perhaps one of you has a rational explanation: a hoax, a mass hallucination, or even a scientific phenomenon. I am open to suggestions. But I know what I saw, and until I can explain it, I will remain vigilant, watching the bridge and the river, wondering if this is just the beginning.
