The last Saturday of summer, we gathered at my cousin’s farmhouse for her eighteenth birthday. The party was a blur of laughter, music, and the scent of grilled corn. As the night wore on, my friend Lena, who had promised to drive us home, started swaying and slurring her words. Concerned, my cousin insisted we stay overnight. I guided Lena to the living room, where she collapsed onto a worn leather couch, instantly asleep. I decided to fetch a glass of water from the kitchen, leaving her alone for just a moment.

When I returned, the air in the room felt wrong, thick and cold. I paused in the doorway, the glass sweating in my hand. There was a figure standing behind the couch, leaning over Lena, its long fingers gently stroking her tangled hair. My heart hammered against my ribs as I took a step closer, my bare feet silent on the wooden floor. The man was tall and impossibly thin, his pale skin almost translucent in the dim lamplight. He wore an immaculate white suit, the fabric pristine, as if untouched by the dust of the old house.

He turned his head, and I saw his eyes. They were pools of pure black, no whites, no irises, just endless voids that seemed to swallow the light around him. My breath hitched, and I tried to call out, but my throat was closed, no sound escaping. He smiled then, a slow, deliberate curving of his lips that didn’t reach his eyes. He took a step towards me, his movements fluid and predatory. I was frozen, my limbs as heavy as stone, as he extended a hand, his fingers reaching for my face.

I felt a cold pressure on my cheek, like a whisper of winter, and my vision dimmed at the edges. The room seemed to contract, the walls closing in as the man leaned closer, his black eyes boring into mine. In a voice that was both a murmur and a roar, he said, ‘You see me now, but soon, you’ll see nothing at all.’ I gasped, and the spell broke. He vanished, dissolving into the shadows like smoke, leaving me trembling in the silent room, Lena still peacefully asleep.

I didn’t sleep that night. I sat by the window, watching the dark fields, my skin prickling at every creak of the old house. When dawn finally broke, I told my cousin what I had seen, but she dismissed it as a dream. Lena woke with a headache, no memory of the night. But as I drove us away with the rising sun, I couldn’t shake the feeling that those black eyes were still watching, and that the pale man in the white suit had come for us both, marking us for something far worse than a birthday party.
