My sister-in-law, Lena, and her friend, Marta, had always been drawn to the old, moss-covered cemetery that sat at the edge of our town. It wasn’t the kind of place you visited for fun, but Lena claimed she could feel things there, a hum just beneath the skin.

That autumn afternoon, the sky was a bruised grey, and a chill wind rattled the dead leaves. Lena, Marta, and Marta’s boyfriend, Tom, decided to explore further than they ever had, past the crumbling stone wall and into the older section where the headstones were tilted and worn.

Lena stopped short. She said she heard a voice, faint but clear, like a whisper carried on the wind. It was calling her name. She turned, and the voice led her deeper into the cemetery, between the gnarled trees. She felt compelled to follow, and Marta and Tom reluctantly went with her, their earlier laughter now subdued.

The voice shimmered in Lena’s mind, and she spoke it aloud, ‘Marin.’ The name felt strange on her tongue. The voice directed her to a specific grave, a flat, weathered stone half-buried in leaves. When they brushed away the dirt, the name ‘Marin’ was engraved there, barely legible.

Marta shivered, and Tom pulled his jacket closer. They wanted to leave, but Lena hesitated. Her fingers traced the cold granite, and she felt something stir beneath the earth, a pressure, a presence. She whispered, ‘He’s not at peace.’

That night, back at our house, Lena couldn’t shake the feeling. She told us about the encounter, and I could see the fear in her eyes. I didn’t believe in ghosts, but something about her story felt off. I decided to drive to the cemetery myself, to prove there was nothing to it.

But as I walked among the graves, I felt a cold spot near Marin’s stone. I saw a pale, filmy shape, barely visible in the corner of my eye. It vanished when I turned. I left, a knot in my stomach.

The next day, Lena called me, her voice trembling. She said she’d found a photograph in her room, one she’d never seen before. It showed a man in old-fashioned clothes, standing by a grave. The man’s face was her own.

And that’s when I understood. The voice hadn’t been calling Lena. It had been calling me. But I had been too stubborn to listen, and now it was too late. Lena was already gone, replaced by something that wore her smile, and I was the only one who knew the truth.

I haven’t been back to the cemetery since. But every night, I hear a faint whisper in the wind, calling my name, and I know that the pale visitor who took Lena is waiting for me to make the same mistake.
