My daughter, Elara, came to my study one night, her small frame illuminated by the dim glow of my desk lamp. She stood perfectly still, her eyes fixed on something beyond my shoulder. I set down my pen and asked, ‘What are you doing up so late, sweetheart?’ She didn’t answer; she simply turned and walked away, her footsteps silent on the carpet. I called after her, but she disappeared into the darkness of the hallway without a word.

In the morning, she came down to breakfast looking pale, with dark circles under her eyes, but her behavior was otherwise normal. She ate her cereal quietly, and then, without prompting, she said, ‘Daddy, I had a terrible dream.’ I looked up from my coffee, concerned. She described a man, tall and gaunt, with a face like a weathered statue and eyes like burnt coals, who tried to pull her from her bed. I asked her why she came to my study the night before, but she looked at me with confusion and said, ‘I didn’t.’ I recounted what I had seen, and her mother, Lena, exchanged a worried glance with me.

We decided to take Elara to a child therapist, hoping it would help her cope with the nightmare. But during our session with Dr. Hale, as Elara described the man in more detail, Lena and I felt a chill crawl down our spines. That night, we both had the same dream: the tall man standing beside Elara’s bed, his long fingers stretching toward her. We woke in a cold sweat, convinced something was wrong.

Frustrated and frightened, I set up a hidden camera in Elara’s room and placed voice recorders in every room, determined to capture any evidence of this intruder. The first night, the footage showed Elara sleeping peacefully. But then, at 2:47 AM, a shape appeared at her door—a towering figure, thin and impossibly tall, that moved with a fluid, unnatural gait. It approached her bed, leaned over her, and then retreated, dissolving into nothing at the foot of the bed. The recorder picked up a faint, raspy whispering, too low to understand.

The next night, I watched the live feed, my heart pounding. The figure appeared again, but this time it paused at the door, as if sensing my presence. I could see its face in the grainy green glow: a visage of decayed skin stretched over bones, with eyes that burned with malevolent intelligence. It turned its head directly toward the camera, and I felt a wave of dread wash over me. Then, it vanished.

I played the audio recorders for that night. Amid the static, there was a voice, clear as a bell: ‘She sees me now. Soon, she will come willingly.’ The voice was not entirely human; it had a hollow, echoing quality that made my blood run cold.

Terrified, we decided to move Elara into our bedroom, hoping to protect her. But the figure appeared again, standing in our doorway, watching us with unblinking eyes. It pointed a long, bony finger at Elara and whispered, ‘You cannot hide her from me.’

We sought help from a paranormal investigator, a woman named Margo, who specialized in such malevolent entities. She studied the footage and listened to the recordings, her face growing grim. ‘This is not a ghost,’ she said. ‘It’s something older, something from the spaces between worlds. It feeds on children’s fears, and it will not stop until it has taken the child’s spirit.’

Desperate, we tried everything to protect Elara: salt lines, iron, protective charms. But the entity grew bolder, appearing even in daylight, a shadow that lurked at the edges of our vision. Elara became withdrawn, her skin grew paler, and she often greeted us with hollow eyes, as if her soul were slowly fading.

One night, I confronted the figure directly, stepping between it and Elara’s bed. I demanded it leave my daughter alone. It looked at me, and I felt a crushing pressure in my mind, as if it were probing my thoughts. Then, it spoke to me, its voice like the grinding of stones: ‘She is not yours. She never was. She belongs to the void.’

I lashed out, but my fist passed through the figure as if it were smoke. It laughed, a low, guttural sound, and then dissolved into the shadows.

In the days that followed, Elara grew weaker. She stopped speaking, and her eyes took on a distant, glassy quality. One night, as we slept with her between us, the figure appeared and simply stood at the foot of the bed. I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound came out. The figure extended its hand, and Elara rose from the bed, her movements jerky, as if controlled by unseen strings. She walked toward the figure, and they both faded into the darkness.

Lena and I woke the next morning, our hearts heavy with a nameless dread. Elara’s bed was empty, but there was a note on her pillow, written in childish, trembling handwriting: ‘I have to go now. He is my father.’

We searched for her for months, but she was never found. We moved away, trying to escape the memories, but in every new home, at the foot of every child’s bed, we see a lingering shadow, waiting. And sometimes, in the dead of night, I hear Elara’s voice whispering, ‘Daddy, I’m here,’ and I know the visitor will never truly be gone.
