The antique orrery sat in Elias’s study, a dust-covered relic of forgotten astronomy. He’d inherited it from a distant uncle, a man rumored to have dabbled in more than just star charts. Tonight, a late winter storm raged outside, rattling the old house, and Elias, unable to sleep, found himself drawn to the study. He traced the cold brass of the planets, their tiny spheres glinting in the low lamplight. The house creaked around him, a familiar symphony of age, but then, a new sound emerged. A faint, rhythmic hum, like a low-frequency vibration, seemed to emanate from the orrery itself.

He held his breath, listening. It wasn’t the wind, nor the house settling. It was a steady, almost mechanical thrumming, growing infinitesimally louder. He leaned closer, his ear near the intricate clockwork mechanism that drove the celestial bodies. The hum resolved into distinct pulses, a pattern that felt… deliberate. It wasn’t a random malfunction. It was a cadence, a heartbeat of brass and iron. Elias felt a prickle of unease crawl up his spine.

The orrery’s planets, usually still and stately, began to shift. Not in their orbital paths, but with a slow, unnatural rotation. Mercury, a small, tarnished bead, spun erratically, its surface seeming to ripple. Venus, then Earth, followed suit, their miniature continents and oceans blurring into indistinct smudges. The hum intensified, vibrating not just in the air, but through the floorboards, up his legs, into his very bones. It was a sound that promised something vast and terrible was awakening.

Panic flared. Elias backed away, his eyes wide. The orrery was no longer just a model; it felt like a machine of immense, alien purpose. The light from the lamp flickered, casting grotesque, dancing shadows that seemed to twist and writhe in sync with the hum. He stumbled backward, his hand reaching for the study door, desperate to escape the suffocating pulse of the machine. As his fingers brushed the cold doorknob, the largest planet, Saturn, let out a sharp, grinding click, and the humming stopped abruptly. Silence descended, heavier and more terrifying than the noise that had preceded it. Then, from the depths of the orrery, a single, impossibly smooth, obsidian sphere – one that Elias was certain hadn’t been there before – began to slowly, deliberately, roll out from beneath the celestial mechanism, coming to a stop directly in the center of the room.
