During our summer vacation, my cousin Leo and I visited our grandparents in a small town. They lived in a very old house on Elm Street that was built in the early 1800s.

One evening, around midnight, Leo and I were in the den playing cards. The room suddenly grew cold for just a moment. Then we heard a soft voice, so close it felt like someone was standing beside us. It spoke for only a few seconds. We looked at each other, each thinking the other had spoken, but neither of us had said a word. We shrugged it off.

About five minutes later, it happened again. This time we thought it might be our grandparents or one of our siblings, but everyone else had gone to bed hours ago. We tried to forget about it and went back to our game.

Then, about ten minutes later, we heard a quiet conversation coming from the kitchen. We got up to check, thinking our older brother was playing a trick on us. The kitchen was completely empty. We told ourselves it was just the house settling or the wind outside.

A few minutes later, the voices started again. Frustrated, Leo told the empty room to be quiet. After that, the house fell silent for the rest of the night.
