This is the tale of my sister. Last fall, she took Max, her trusty dog, to visit our grandparents in the countryside. It was getting late when she returned home, and darkness enveloped the road.
As she drove back, Max lay quietly in the backseat, seemingly at peace. The radio played softly, keeping her company as she navigated the winding roads. Approaching a small town known as Maple Grove, a popular spot for travelers, she noticed the streets were eerily empty. The town had a rustic charm, but tonight it felt different.
Surrounded by shadows, her headlights cut through the night, illuminating just enough to keep her moving. Suddenly, a chill ran down her spine, and she felt a shiver creep along her arms. Max, usually calm, began to whine lowly, his ears perked up. Startled, my sister called out to him, trying to calm his unease. He quieted but remained alert, his eyes fixed on something outside the vehicle.
Unease washed over her as she passed a small graveyard nestled beside the rest area. It was a place she had never noticed before, its ancient stones looming in the dark. The air felt heavier, and she couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. With a deep breath, she pressed on, determined to reach home. Yet, the road ahead seemed longer, and the shadows appeared to stretch endlessly, wrapping around her like a cloak.
Max’s growls broke the silence again, more intense this time. She glanced in the rearview mirror, half-expecting to see something lurking behind them. Instead, she found only the stillness of the night. The unease settled in her chest as she reminded herself it was just her imagination. With every mile, however, the sense of dread grew stronger.
Finally, as they neared home, the lights from the house flickered into view. The comforting glow washed away the darkness, and Max settled down, finally at ease. My sister took a deep breath, grateful to be back, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that the night had held something just beyond her understanding.
