Maya first saw her in the old cinema, a place she’d gone to escape the rain. The theater was nearly empty, the screen flickering with an old black-and-white film. Maya sat in the back row, alone, when a figure materialized in the seat beside her, though she hadn’t heard anyone approach. The woman was beautiful in a terrible way: long black hair that seemed to absorb the light, eyes the color of a frozen lake, and enormous bat-like wings that folded behind her like a shattered umbrella. Her skin was the texture of black lace, and her chest revealed a cage of ribs, through which Maya could see a faint, rhythmic glow. She wore a long green skirt that pooled on the sticky floor, and her feet were cloven, like a horse’s. For ten seconds, the creature stared at her, unblinking, then vanished. Maya felt a strange thrill, a sense of being chosen, though she couldn’t explain why.

At first, it was just a presence. The thing, which Maya named ‘Vesper’, began to appear at odd moments. During a family dinner, Maya felt a cold hand on her thigh under the table, and when she looked down, no one was there. While driving, she’d catch a glimpse of a pale face in the rearview mirror, smiling. It was invasive, unsettling, and yet Maya found herself thinking about Vesper constantly, her heart racing with a mix of fear and excitement. She told no one, not even her husband, Leo.

Then the dreams began. Every night, Vesper would come to Maya’s bedside, her wings casting a shadow that blotted out the moon. She would touch Maya with those black, spidery fingers, and Maya would wake with a gasp, her body humming with a pleasure so intense it felt like pain. The sex was visceral, more real than anything she’d ever experienced with Leo. And steadily, Maya began to pull away from her husband. She made excuses to avoid him, found his touch repulsive, and his presence irritating. She started to think about divorce, a thought that had never crossed her mind in ten years of marriage.

Her prayers, once a source of solace, became a torment. The moment she would bow her head to pray, a searing pain would lance through her neck, as if invisible talons were digging into her throat. It ceased as soon as she stopped. She stopped going to church, stopped calling her mother, stopped everything that connected her to her old life. She was becoming a shell, inhabited by this alien desire.

One night, she woke to find Vesper standing at the foot of the bed, more solid than ever. The creature’s blue eyes were tears of liquid nitrogen, and she spoke, her voice like the rustle of dead leaves. ‘You are mine now,’ Vesper said. ‘I have taken root in you. Your husband, your family, your soul—they are mine to consume.’ Maya opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out. She looked at her hands and saw that they were turning black, the skin webbing like the creature’s. She stumbled to the bathroom mirror, but the reflection showed only her own terrified face, except for a faint trace of blue in her irises.

She knew then that Vesper was not a visitation, but an infection. She had invited the monster in, and now it was devouring her from within. Maya tried to fight, to pray, but the pain in her neck was so excruciating that she fell to the floor, gasping. She crawled to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and slashed at her own throat, desperate to cut out the poison. Blood poured, but as she lay dying, a final vision of Vesper appeared above her, wings spread wide, a smile of triumph on her lips. The last thing Maya saw was the world dissolving into a vortex of black and green, and then there was nothing.

In the morning, the police found Maya’s body in the kitchen, a knife in her hand, her throat cut. Her husband Leo wept, unable to understand why she had done such a thing. The autopsy revealed nothing unusual, except for a small, unexplained scar on her neck, exactly where she had felt the pain. And in the morgue, as the attendant was about to close the drawer, a fleeting shadow passed over the body, and a whisper of wings filled the cold air, though the room was empty.
