I still recall the first and last time I encountered something otherworldly back when I was in elementary school. It was a chilling experience when a girl in a gray dress appeared before me in the library, her eyes wide and her expression unreadable. That moment has lingered in my mind, a haunting memory that I try to push away. Since then, I’ve often felt a strange presence around me, accompanied by a gentle breeze that would send shivers down my spine. Despite the unease, I’ve learned to live with it.

Now, as a third-year nursing student, I find myself on my practicum in the maternity ward of a local hospital. I’ve never heard any eerie tales about this place, so I thought it would be a typical experience. Our shifts run from 10 PM to 6 AM, a time that feels both quiet and heavy with anticipation. On that particular night, the ward was mostly empty, with only two mothers-to-be under our care.

Around 2 AM, the first patient began to labor. As the nurses and I prepared for the birth, a sense of calm settled over the room. The atmosphere was peaceful, yet I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. I glanced around, half-expecting to see someone, but nothing was there. After the delivery, the mother and her newborn were moved to a recovery area, and I felt a strange stillness envelop the ward.

Not long after, the second patient started to experience contractions. As I assisted her, I felt a chill run through the air, and for a moment, I could have sworn I heard soft, unintelligible murmurs echoing around me. I shook my head, trying to dismiss the sensation as exhaustion. Yet, as I focused on my work, the air grew heavier, and a feeling of unease settled deep within me.

Despite my nerves, the delivery went smoothly. Once the baby was born, I couldn’t help but admire the miracle of life. In that moment, the whispers faded, replaced by the joyful cries of a newborn. I realized that while some experiences may be unsettling, they also remind us of the beauty and wonder of life. As dawn approached, I left the ward feeling a mix of fear and gratitude, knowing that I would carry this experience with me for years to come.
