The Mystery of the Dry Tap

When I was twelve, my family lived in a small house that used to be an office. It belonged to my father’s employer and wasn’t equipped with a water supply. Instead, we relied on a factory nearby for our daily needs. Every time we needed water, we would trek the long distance of about half a mile to fill our buckets. It was tiring work, and my parents decided to make life easier by connecting a plastic hose from the factory to our home.

One Saturday afternoon, my mother set off to the factory to fetch water. She filled the buckets and returned home, expecting to find the hose delivering water to our kitchen. However, when she turned on the tap, nothing came out. Confused, she examined the hose, thinking it might be leaking somewhere. After a few minutes of frustration, she called for me and my younger sister to help her figure out the problem.

We followed her back to the factory, where she pointed out the connected hose. As we inspected it, I noticed that the end of the hose was submerged in the shallow puddle, but the water was still not flowing. My sister and I knelt down, trying to understand what was wrong. We checked for kinks and bends but found nothing out of the ordinary.

Then, I had an idea. I suggested we go back to the factory and check the tap itself. Maybe it wasn’t turned on properly. When we reached the factory, I turned the faucet and saw the water gushing out. We quickly rushed back home with the hose, excitement bubbling in our hearts.

Finally, as we connected the hose, clean water began to flow into our kitchen. We cheered in triumph, relieved that our little adventure had a happy ending. That day, we learned the value of teamwork and the importance of looking for solutions together. From then on, fetching water became a little less of a chore and a little more of a family adventure.
