The rain had finally stopped, leaving the air thick and heavy. Iris and her husband, Caleb, had spent the week at their remote cabin in the pine forests of the Pacific Northwest, helping Caleb’s aunt pack up her belongings before she moved to a retirement home in Arizona. They had left their golden retriever, Gus, in the care of what they believed was a reliable neighbor, a quiet man named Mr. Harlow who lived down the dirt road.

On the last morning, Iris woke before dawn, the aftermath of a nightmare lingering in her mind. She had been reading something on her tablet about local legends, and the images had disturbed her sleep. She lay still, listening to the chirping of birds outside, the soft breathing of Caleb beside her. The room was cast in a pale blue light as the sun began to lift the darkness. Then she heard it: the patter of paws on the wooden floor, the excited panting of a large dog. Her heart swelled with joy. ‘Gus!’ she thought. Their neighbor must have brought him by early, knowing they were leaving that day.

She felt Gus rush into the room, his nails clicking on the floorboards. She kept her eyes closed, a smile on her lips. The dog circled the bed, then jumped up, landing heavily on the mattress. Something in the weight and the sound was off, but she dismissed it. She felt him walk over her legs, his fur brushing against her, and then settle at the foot of the bed, his weight pressing down on the quilt. She heard Caleb stir. ‘Gus? What are you doing here, boy?’ he mumbled, half asleep. The dog let out a low whine, and Iris felt the bed shift as he crawled up toward them.

She opened her eyes, expecting to see Gus’s familiar golden face. Instead, she saw a figure – not Gus, but something vaguely dog-like, with matted, dark fur and eyes that reflected the dim light like mirrors. It let out a low, guttural growl that vibrated through the bedframe. Iris screamed, but the sound caught in her throat. The creature lunged at Caleb, but as if it were a shadow passing through them, it faded, leaving only a cold draft. The room was silent. Caleb sat up, confused. ‘What’s wrong?’ he asked. Iris was trembling, pointing at the foot of the bed, but there was nothing there. ‘You must have had a nightmare,’ Caleb said, rubbing his eyes.

But the feeling of dread persisted. Iris couldn’t shake the image of that creature. She got out of bed and went to the window, looking out at the yard. The ground was soggy from the rain, and she could see paw prints in the mud leading from the forest to the cabin and then away. They were larger than any dog’s she had seen. She felt a chill run down her spine. ‘We need to leave,’ she said to Caleb. ‘Now.’

As they hastily packed their things, the silence of the cabin was oppressive. They loaded the car, and Iris kept glancing at the treeline, half expecting that creature to appear. They drove back to their home in the city, a safe distance away. But that night, as she lay in their own bed, she heard the same sound: the patter of paws in the hallway, the panting, the scratching at the door. She froze, her heart pounding. She whispered to Caleb, ‘Do you hear that?’ He was already asleep.

The next morning, there were scratches on the outside of their bedroom door, deep gouges in the wood. And in the backyard, the grass was trampled in a circle, as if something had been pacing all night. Iris knew then that their encounter in the cabin was not a nightmare. Something had followed them home, something that wore the shape of their beloved Gus but was not. And as she looked out the window, she saw a flash of dark fur disappearing into the bushes at the edge of their property, and she knew they would never be free of it.
