The old stone edifice of Blackwood Academy loomed against a perpetual twilight sky, its ivy-choked walls whispering tales of forgotten students and lingering sorrows. For young Thomas and his friends, the hallowed halls had always been a place of damp corridors and echoing footsteps, but lately, a different kind of chill had begun to permeate their lives. It started subtly, a breath of unnatural cold that would sweep through a classroom, raising gooseflesh on unsuspecting arms. They’d dismissed it at first, blaming drafts from the ancient, rattling windows.

Then came the incident in the West Wing lavatories. Sarah, a usually unflappable girl with eyes like a startled deer, recounted her terror with trembling hands. She’d been washing her hands at the chipped porcelain sink, the only sound the rhythmic drip-drip-drip from a faulty tap. As she met her own reflection in the warped, age-spotted mirror, a flicker of movement caught her eye. From the shadowed recess of the last, grimy stall, a pale face had peered out, a grotesque, unmoving smile stretching across its lips. Sarah, heart hammering against her ribs, spun around, only to find the stall empty. A gust of frigid air, smelling faintly of stagnant water and something acrid, followed her as she fled, her screams swallowed by the cavernous silence of the academy.

The unease solidified into a gnawing dread. The stalls in the West Wing lavatories became a source of morbid fascination and outright terror. One cubicle, the very one Sarah had described, remained perpetually locked. The caretaker swore he never locked it, that the mechanism was broken, yet it remained resolutely sealed. The boys in Thomas’s year would dare each other to rattle the handle, their bravado crumbling with each unanswered attempt. It was a silent challenge, a barrier that hinted at something held captive within.

Thomas himself experienced it during a particularly grueling study session. He’d sought refuge in the quiet solitude of the lavatories, the only light a sickly yellow glow from a bare bulb overhead. As he splashed cold water on his face, the air grew heavy, thick with an oppressive stillness. He looked up, his gaze meeting his own distorted image in the mirror. Behind his own reflection, superimposed like a faded photograph, was the same spectral face Sarah had seen. This time, the smile was wider, a chilling rictus that seemed to promise an eternity of despair. He didn’t run. He couldn’t. He merely watched as the reflection of the girl, her eyes vacant and dark, slowly faded, leaving him alone with the unnerving silence and the lingering scent of decay. The locked stall door, he realized with a fresh wave of terror, wasn’t a barrier. It was a promise.
