The Midnight Visitor Returns

When I was a child, my family moved into an old apartment. The first evening, I slept on a mattress on the floor because my furniture had not arrived. I lay awake for a long time before getting up for a glass of water. The clock on the stove read 3:07 AM.

I went back to my mattress and tried to sleep. Suddenly, I felt a light pressure on my leg, like a gentle poke. I sat up quickly, but saw nothing. I told myself it was just the blanket shifting. Then I felt it again, a soft prodding on my shoulder.

I called out for my father and slept in my parents’ room that night. For many weeks, the soft pokes returned at the same early hour. Then, one night, the feeling changed. A sharp pain pinched my hand, leaving a small mark.

We left that apartment soon after. Years later, I visited the old building. That night, as I rested in the familiar space, I felt the soft pressure once more, a gentle tap on my arm.
