The Mechanic’s Apprentice

It was the summer of 2019 when I joined a group of paranormal enthusiasts for an overnight investigation at the National Railway Heritage Museum, a vast complex of disused locomotive sheds and workshops in the English Midlands. Our focus was the ‘Ironworks’, a cavernous building where steam engines had been repaired and rebuilt until the 1960s, and which was now rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young apprentice who had died in a tragic accident.

The night was warm and cloudless, and we were all in high spirits, our anticipation palpable as we set up our equipment in the echoing space. The air was thick with the smell of rust and old grease, and the only light came from our torches and the dim emergency bulbs high above. We began the vigil, calling out into the darkness, asking for any spirit to make itself known. The atmosphere was charged, and I felt the familiar thrill of adrenaline as I waited for something to happen.

About an hour in, as we took a short break and chatted in hushed tones, I saw it: a solid black shape, like a man in overalls, rushed past the large open doorway at the far end of the shed. It moved with purpose, not floating but walking, and disappeared behind a stack of old crates. I wasn’t the only one to notice; several others in the group gasped and pointed. We scrambled to our feet and ran to the doorway, our torches cutting through the shadows, but when we reached the spot, there was no one there. The crates were still, and the only sound was the ticking of metal as it cooled.

We searched the entire shed, every nook and cranny, but found nothing. The security guard on duty confirmed we were the only people in the building. Baffled, we returned to our vigil area, but the energy had changed. The playful anticipation was replaced by a nervous tension, and we began to hear noises: rhythmic clanking, like metal on metal, coming from the far corner where the shape had vanished. We called out, asking ‘Who are you?’, and the clanking stopped. Then, from the darkness, a voice, low and gruff, whispered, ‘Don’t you know? I’m the mechanic’s apprentice.’

Chills ran down my spine. We tried to engage further, asking what it wanted, but the voice fell silent. As the night wore on, we captured EVPs and anomalous readings, but nothing as clear as that voice. When dawn broke, we packed up, shaken but exhilarated. As I drove away, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the apprentice was still there, waiting for someone to finish his work, trapped in a cycle of repairing machines that would never run again. The story of the mechanic’s apprentice became the talk of our group, a haunting tale we would recount for years, always with the same eerie question: what does a ghost do when it’s not haunting? It repairs itself, and it waits for the next soul to listen.
