It began with a scuff of dust on the floorboards of the old farmhouse I’d inherited from my grandmother, a place I’d moved into after my divorce, seeking a fresh start with my daughter, Lily, who was just three. The house had a quiet, watchful quality, and I chalked up the creaks and groans to age. But the night I brought home the antique dresser I’d found at a yard sale, things shifted.

That first night, after I’d put Lily to bed and was folding laundry in the living room, I heard a distinct, rhythmic tap-tap-tap coming from the direction of the spare bedroom where I’d placed the dresser. It was slow, patient, like a finger drumming on wood. I ignored it, attributing it to a loose shutter. But the sound persisted, growing more insistent, until I finally opened the door. The room was dark, the dresser standing against the wall like a patient beast. As I stood there, the tap-tap-tap grew faster, and I could feel a cold breath on the back of my neck. I slammed the door and didn’t sleep that night.

Over the following week, the activity escalated. Objects would disappear and reappear in odd places—my keys in the fridge, Lily’s toys stacked in a perfect pyramid on the kitchen table. Then, one evening, as I was tucking Lily in, I saw a shadow move across her wall—a tall, thin shape that seemed to lean over her crib. I rushed to her side, but she was sleeping peacefully. When I turned to leave, I noticed a small, round object on her pillow: a single, white marble, cold to the touch, that I knew wasn’t hers.

The house’s history came back to me through a conversation with an old neighbor. A child had lived here decades ago, a boy named Mason who had gone missing in 1987. His parents had searched everywhere but had never found him. When I asked about the dresser, the neighbor’s face went pale. ‘That was his mother’s favorite piece,’ she said. ‘She’d always say that Mason used to hide behind it when he played.’

I tried to get rid of the dresser, but every attempt failed. The junk removal company I called had their truck unexpectedly break down right in my driveway, and the next day, I found the dresser back inside the house, as if it had never been moved. Lily started to talk to someone named ‘Mason’ when I wasn’t in the room, and when I asked her about it, she would just point to the dresser and smile.

One night, I woke to the sound of Lily crying. I went to her room and found her sitting up, pointing at the closet. ‘He’s in there,’ she whispered. I opened the closet door, and there, in the darkness, I saw a faint outline of a small boy, his eyes were two hollow pits. He took a step forward, and the floorboards beneath him creaked with an unnatural weight. I grabbed Lily and ran, but when I looked back, the hallway was filled with a deep, icy silence. The door to the spare room was open, and I could see the dresser at the end, its drawers slightly ajar, as if waiting to be opened.

The next day, I called a paranormal investigator, a stern woman named Clara. She walked through the house with her equipment, and her face grew grimmer with each room. ‘This isn’t a residual haunting,’ she said. ‘This is an attachment. The spirit of the child is bound to the dresser, and he’s waiting for a playmate.’ She told me that I needed to give him what he wanted: a piece of my daughter’s hair, her favorite toy, and a confession that I was afraid. That if I didn’t, he would never leave, and eventually, he would take Lily with him.

I did as she said. I placed the items in the top drawer of the dresser, and as I closed it, I felt a slight vibration, like a heartbeat. That night, the house was silent for the first time in weeks. I slept deeply, but when I woke, Lily was gone. I searched the house frantically, until I came to the spare room. The dresser was gone, and in its place was a single marble on the floor. I picked it up, and it was warm. I heard a noise behind me, and I turned to see Lily standing in the doorway, her eyes wide and empty. ‘He said I could come back tomorrow,’ she said in a flat voice. ‘He wants me to bring the marble.’
